A ton of awesome games on the PS2, probably more than any console in recent memory.

Really?!  Well, that's just GREAT news!  I sure love the ones that I've encountered so far!  Alas, so many comics and games, and so little time!

Check out Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 on the PS2, two of my fave games on the system.

Skyrim:  So I'm trying to be a badass Mage.  Right now put all my spells and powers into favorite so that it's right there.  Is this the best strategy?

Are you playing on PC or console?

So are the reports that Skyrim on the PS3 in unfixbly broken true?

I think the problems on PS3 are not entirely widespread.  Bethesda has issued patches to address the issues, and will undoubtedly release more in the future to continue to tweak the game.

3 is probably the better game and is a prequel anyway so no harm in playing that first. You might want to do a bit of reading on the first Metal Gear Solid game to get some back story.

PS3.

Ah.  On PC, you can map the number keys to items in your quick menu (those you have favorited).  Not sure if you can map items to buttons on console...

I had a very video-gamey Christmas. I got:

The God of War PS3 collection (the first two God of War titles remastered in HD)
All three Uncharted Games (The double pack of the first two and then also 3)
Skyrim

Early impressions:

Uncharted is one the prettiest video game I've ever played. The environments, player models, textures, lighting, water effects etc are all top notch. And this is only the first one! I can't wait to see how good 2 and 3 look! It's also a blast to play as well!

Skyrim is awesome. I'm only a little bit in but I'm already hooked. The size of the world is almost daunting. So far my level 4 Dark Elf with a penchant for double handed axes and warhammers has only completed one dungeon, but I can't wait for more.

I guess I'm a cheap bastard, because I have never bought a gaming console or computer game itself.  Instead, since the late 1970s, I've waited for my nephew to "trade up," and then I inherit his old system and games!  I got his Atari when he switched to Intellivision, and his Sega Saturn when he switched to Playstation, etc., etc., etc.

And thus, I'm now playing PS2 (ever since last Christmas when he upgraded to PS3 and Wii).  I know!  I am SUCH a moocher!  Anyway, like the 11 o'closcars, they're new to me!  So, at the moment, I'm playing one of the Medal of Honor games, and the Hulk game (from the second movie), and Iron Man (from the first movie).

But I hear that those newfangled PS3 games are pretty cool!   Tongue

I second the metal gear 2 and 3 love, and if you want to see how it all starts you can play part 1 on the ps2 as well, since that system is backwards compatible.

I'm a few years behind in gaming as well, some PS2 games I played over the 00s that you might dig are:

God of War 1 and 2
Okami
Shadow of the Colossus
Resident Evil 4

As far as great PS2 games go, it doesn't get much better than Ratchet and Clank. One of my favorite video game franchises of all time.

Speaking of retro gaming, my girlfriend bought me a PSP for Christmas.  Total surprise, but that was half the fun for me.  It's a rare case when I don't already know 90% of what's available.  It's been fun figuring out what's out there, what's likely to be worth playing, and what other stuff I can do with it.  She gave me some credit at a local game store along with the system, so I got:

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Tactics Ogre
Jeanne D'Arc (strategy RPG)
Little Big Planet

I'm playing Tactics Ogre first and digging it.

If you have a PS3 and don't have any of the Uncharted games then that thing is going to waste. The gaming experience that those games provide is something else. I think Metal Gear Solid 4 has better graphics overall but I think they were aiming for realism and that's not always gonna give you the prettiest visuals. Meanwhile, the guys behind Uncharted focused on making a damn pretty game and I appreciate that.

And it doesn't get too bogged down in telling a super complex story, it just tells you what you need to know and lets you have fun. And it's very easy to pick up and play, not a lot of things put in there that'd stop you from actually playing the game.

I've played 1 and 2 and in both instances, I played them from start to finish. It's so damn fun (sorry for repeatedly using that word) and it's hard to put down.

I second the metal gear 2 and 3 love, and if you want to see how it all starts you can play part 1 on the ps2 as well, since that system is backwards compatible.

Definitely give Metal Gear Solid 1 a go if you can. As great as games have been since then, that's still my favourite gaming experience of all time. It's one of the games that started this whole cinematic trend in gaming. The Psycho Mantis battle game me CHILLS! All the boss battles were fantastic.

If you have a Game Cube by any chance, they did a remake of Metal Gear Solid (called Twin Snakes) and that has updated gameplay from MGS2 (like going into first person mode when shooting and some other things).

I'm a few years behind in gaming as well, some PS2 games I played over the 00s that you might dig are:

God of War 1 and 2
Okami
Shadow of the Colossus
Resident Evil 4

Those are some good suggestions. I'm not a big fan of the God of War games (not really sure why but I could never get into them) but they're good. I much preferred the Devil May Cry series. I never played 2 but 1 was very enjoyable and 3 is a major improvement.

Have a look at some gaming sites, I know a few of them have a "top PS2 games" section. That should give you an idea of what awesome games are available. Lots of great games to play, it should keep you busy for a while Thumbs Up

As far as great PS2 games go, it doesn't get much better than Ratchet and Clank. One of my favorite video game franchises of all time.

YES! I played 3 from start to finish on the night before my wedding Tongue

I got a PSP when it first came out but I haven't used it all that much. I'm not a big fan of the physical device but the games on it are fantastic. I hope they eventually port the games to something that I'd feel like playing them on.

By the way, Metal Gear Solid fans that have a PS3 should keep an eye out for the Metal Gear Solid HD collection. They're remastering 2, 3 and Peace Walker in HD.

Speaking of retro gaming...

Wow!  Thanks for all the tips, gang!  Very much appreciated!  Now if only some of you would come over a work for me, then I would have the time to play all these terrific games!   Cheesy

I have very fond memories of my PS2, that console has one of the best libraries of games as others have pointed out.  Several of the Final Fantasy editions were my favorites along with the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat wars my friends and I had.

As far as old school gaming goes, I still have my original Atari 2600 with a plethora of awesome games, and I am still partial to the first Nintendo system, while not owning one myself a couple of buddies do and after some drinks it's always a good time to break out Mike Tyson's Punch Out and Super Contra.  I think I will remember that code for unlimited lives in Super Contra till the day I die.

Just finished up Portal 2. Hell of a game, that. I would say as a whole it isn't as good as the first one, if only because it just seems like a stretched out version of the first (and I think it would be better with a chapter cut off). But one thing about the Portal team over there at Valve, they really know how to pull of a boss fight when it seems like most other games do a very poor job of it.

I am also apparently about 3/4 done with Arkham City and I have to say that while I am enjoying it I'm not enjoying it as much as the first. I just seem to be getting more annoyed with some of the fights in this one, it doesn't help that I am playing on my PC with K/M when it definitely seems to be tuned for a controller.

I hope to finish Arkham City tomorrow (I have this whole week off from work) then might start on either Heavy Rain or Bulletstorm which my parents got for me for Christmas on my PS3. Not sure which one first though I am leaning toward Heavy Rain.

Also picked up Space Pirates and Zombies and Hearts of Iron 3 as part of the daily deals on Steam today, but those are just getting added to the (currently expanding) list of games I have to play on Steam.
