Beastie Boys today (obviously). It's pretty tough to have your own "sound"…it's also tough to stay relevant for so many years, the Beastie Boys did both. They were a band that people could agree on, whether you were a snob when it came to music, or you just listened to music for the hell of it. They never had a group of people hating on them all the time, well, maybe my parents when I was in fifth grade. They were just the Beastie Boys, and for a long time, before people really went overboard with categorizing everything, that was just it, they were their own thing.
It was also pretty strange at the time to be listening to white guys taking on the genre of rap, and not a mockery, which guys like Vanilla Ice turned it onto. They always came off like guys who just didn't give a fuck, and I have always respected that.
Paul's Boutique…that album changed me. I have probably gone through at least 4 tapes, probably a couple c.d.s…A.W.O.L. literally destroyed one of my speakers, and I still listen to it over and over again, it's one of my favorite things in the world.
I know that it's not like they all died…and if they do come out with another album…I will buy it of course, just like I do all their albums…but that gravely voice not being present will just not be the same.
Gonna miss you High Plains Drifter.

Like everyone below, I've been mainlining the Beastie Boys all weekend. A friend turned me onto them circa 'Hello Nasty'. I was in Japan at the time and remember re-creating the Intergalactic video in Shinjuku station (alcohol may have been involved). And have loved them ever since. MCA, you will be missed.
Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique, Ill Communication, Aglio & Oglio, New York State of Mind (DJ Green Lantern's amazing Beasties mixtape) and To the 5 Boroughs.
