Last night I was reading a little book you all may have heard of called Mysterius the Unfathomable Whistle
While I was reading this I thought why am I not reading more stuff like this? Why am I reading all this crap from the big 2.

So today much to the dismay of LCS owner I cut my pull list from 20 -25 titles down to 2,Proof and Hack Slash.
But I will still read Secret Six,Fables,Jack of Fables,Air,Northlanders,DMZ,House of Mystery,Rex Mundi,Walking Dead,The Ast wolfman ,All Hail Megatron in trades.

Some of this also has to do with the unpopular topic of 3.99 marvel comics. After reading Joe Q's remarks in the new Cup O Joe I have had enough.I figured the only way to drop-kick ole Joe in the nuts is to quit buying Marvel books.
Daredevil is my favorite book in general,I know it is not a 3.99 book, but it is a Marvel book none the less.

Joe isn't going to notice that someone isn't buying 20+ Marvel books a month anymore but maybe someone like Image or BOOM,Darkhorse,IDW,Avatar will notice that someone new is buying theirs.

Yes I will be missing out on all he big summer events and the cross-overs but I am pretty sure I will get filled in
between here and all the podcast's I listen to.

I used to be quantity over quality now it's the other way around.Well I am going to get down off this soapbox before somebody runs over here and pushes me off.

i just don't quite get why you dropped daredevil if you're going "quality over quantity." you said daredevil was your favorite title...that would lead me to believe you felt it was the most "quality" title…why drop it? is marvel so evil that you're willing to sacrifice something you enjoy? seems like a waste to me.

I've done the same thing. I had started cutting Marvel books when the price increase was announced. I cut all Marvel books when this whole recent bit hit the fan. Reading Quesada's response in the Cup o Joe thing convinced me I'm doing the right thing. Is Marvel evil? No. But they sure are coming across as disrespectful to the people who made them. Sacrificing something you enjoy implies they are the only game in town and the only comic company producing enjoyable comics.

I can't speak for everyone, and I'm not sure I have a real clear way of explaining my own thoughts so forgive me if this rambles a little. There are so many good comics coming out right now, many of which are self published. Purchasing a self published book means the money you spend goes more directly to the creators. At a time when money is tighter, everyone one is having to make due with less. Creators are selling less, fans are buying less. So now is when Marvel decides to raise prices? I can understand this. Increase market share, keep the competition down. Capitalism. From that perspective it makes sense. As a consumer, I got a peek behind the curtain, and that made me start thinking. Where is my money going? How do I feel about Marvel in light of current revelations? What deserves my money? I don't have an unlimited amount of money to spend, if I did, the price increase would be a non-issue for me. However, since it is an issue and I need to make cuts because of the price increase what titles do I cut? Some titles that I really enjoy were going to have to get cut.

Marvel made the decision real easy for me. I think it's fairly clear the price increase is due to greed. They can pretty it up anyway they want, make up reasons for the price increase that, while believable, aren't really the truth of the matter. The ugly truth is they're doing it because they can. Because it will increase the profits of the company and make share holders happy. Why should I care if Marvel shareholders are happy? Simple answer, I don't. I know Marvel will not notice my defection. There are plenty of people out there who will continue to buy those books no matter what the price. How many people are going to decide to stop buying Marvel in order to support books like Proof or Dynamo5? Those types of books need my money more than Marvel.

Smart move, brother. The best way to get the Big 2 to listen to your voice as a consumer is to stop buying.

Proof over Daredevil is a wise choice, as well.  Thumbs Up

From your list, you have some good books in your future (though there were good books in your past too, as big two stuff isn't "crap" just because it's from the big two, but I know what you meant). If you don't want to give Marvel any more of your money, but want to still keep up with some titles, you should check out your library's selection. They may have a lot of stuff there.

Karma, karma, karma! Congratulations on the decision. I don't think you'll regret it.

I encourage you to add Locke & Key to that reading list. It's one of the best comics n the market,. The writing, art and coloring are all excellent. Please consider giving Hellboy and BPRD a try too. Like Mysterius the Unfathomable, those books have a singularity of vision you rarely find in Marvel or DC titles.

Of course, you can find it in Criminal and Incognito but those are basically indie books being published by Marvel. Smiley

Sometimes taking a stand on an issue means sacrifice.  And in this case, he'll be compensated by other great titles.

Kudos to going cold turkey from Marvel  - I haven't quite done it yet, but you're making me consider it.    Daredevil is gonna be around regardless - you can always catch up in trades somewhere down the line.

I recommended more people do something like this a few months ago and got shit than a little bit.

Glad to hear that someone who doesn't even listen to my show (I think) has come to the same conclusion.

FN Karma for you, guy.

I do have the Locke and Key hardcover but it is Regina right and I do have 2 issues of criminal and really like it but does everybody consider that a Marvel book? My plan for Daredevil is if I find a trade where I left off on eBay cheap I will pick it up.That way money wont be going to Marvel.Oh and I plan on buying Hellboy in the library editions.

The Sword is indeed awesome. I just read the first trade and I should be getting the second in the mail tomorrow. I also enjoyed Girls quite a bit, but my favorite is still Ultra. If you haven't read it, you guys owe it to yourselves!

And Locke & Key, which I read based on how much Chris loved it, completely blew my mind. Plus that hardcover edition is just beautiful.

I don't because it's a creator-owned book being published by Marvel (or, to be precise, a Marvel imprint: Icon). editorially and contractually speaking, Icon books aren't handled like other Marvel titles.

I might be mistaken but I think even the payment for the creators is structured more like the Image Comics publications. Basically, if readers who support Criminal and Incognito are supporting the creators of creator-owned books.

Awesome (and I hope you enjoy Locke & Key when you get to it). Smiley
