Hey, yeah! He can drown right? And I bet his lips don't seal shut when he tries, do they? Being made of the orange rock an all...? Horrible! (Wonder why Hydro-Man didn't think of it? Or Sandman...?)

This creative team began hitting their groove now, continuing from Byrne's run in spirit, but adding a nod to Kirby/Lee/Kirby by introducing something new every issue (villian or guest star) while continuing a true serialized epic of character-driven subplots that would include most corners of the FF's world/cast......and superbly drawn in classic Marvel Super-Hero style by Ryan & Bulanadi....so many characters, and such well choreographed battle scenes that depict the action blow-by-blow rather than simply presenting a couple of posed 'snap-shots' of the action as is common today. And Sue took center-stage and had lots of character development and moments (and was shown as being beautiful and sexy again, a lost design element during the latter part of and since Byrne's run).
I love this run, right up there behind Stan & Jack & Byrne, and alongside Wolfman/Buscemas/Perez/Byrne in my book!

While I respect what they were trying to do (I introducing new things, serials, subplots) it becomes too 90's shocktastic. I don't think were there yet with #360 but the Thing with a helmet and Johnny burning down I think it was a University? is right up that alley. I was interested in it with my new to comics non discerning eye but even then it didn't take me long to leave the title. Maybe I already said that before in the Marvel Noise threads? If I saw this run in my lcs's quarter bins though I would definitely pick the run up. I enjoyed that Marvel noise recap saga.

And I don't think I've said it before, knowing Steve Raker's utter love for this era, but when they lose Reed and Sue becomes ascendant and (giving honor to Steve again) "sexy," I was just most annoyed by the absence of Reed. I'm glad it gave Sue a time to shine, but I remember her shining back under Perez, when Reed lost his powers and he decided to bust up the FF because he felt ineffectual. Sue kicked him in the pants one good time then, without changing her costume for the more revealing.
In utha woids, I have some ought with this run. But like Vince, I bought every one of them.

I respectfully disagree, because the 'shocks' weren't just contrived 'drive-by' hits...they were story elements that continued to develop....Johnny had the screws put to him and was desperate and up against the wall when he went near nova to survive a vicious attack he couldn't otherwise win....and there were consquences, which ultimately fostered some sympathy in Lyja and helped turn her from her destructive path. .....and the Thing with the old helmet from the first issues of Fantastic Four was cool, dagnabbit!....and also plot driven, as he was scarred by Wolverine, and the wound got worse and worse and pounded on by adversaries and Ben returned to feeling like a horrible looking monster versus ever-lovin' bashful blue-eyed Benji.....when Reed was gone, he let his feelings for Sue develop, but felt himself an unworthy monster, just like the old days. Yeah, yeah.... .....besides getting sexy Sue, another thing that ws cool about Sue's story while Reed was gone was the focus on and development of her relationships with the other characters, now not simply through the 'prisim' of Reed: Namor T'Challa, Scott Lang, Ben, Uatu, etc.

They may have been incorporated into the story better but they were still intended to be shocks. It was the 90’s so every title needed something wild and crazy and I always think of this as how as the FF did their part. I would have felt better with the helmet if it didn’t come about the way it did. I’m trying to think of a modern equivalent like Hawkeye dying or something.

Encountering him was part of the exploration of Occulus's world, if I'm not mistaken
