Okay, I know the this is too logical a question for this but I still want to know: Even if he can stretch like that, doesn't he still have any nerves or organs? I mean, how does this not hurt like a son of a bitch? I freakin' love that Doom/Namor panel. Doom's body language is hilarious to me.

bryanb, the best compliment I can pay you (and this thread) is that it's making me want to read the Lee/Kirby FF. That's something I'd resigned myself I would probably never do, but I'm loving what I'm seeing.

Since just seeing a few random panels is turning the tide for you, does that mean that you resigned yourself never to read such an important, widely-beloved and influential series without ever having seen a lick of it?

I've seen some of these comics in collections and such before, but no I haven't read much of it. It's staggering the amount of things I've never read, prose or comics.
I've always been cool with trying all kinds of comics, but I just haven't made my way back to reading too many older comics, and I was pretty sure this would be a run I wouldn't ever get to. I've only been reading comics heavy since the early 2000s and there are only so many hours in the day. As it stands I'm already overloaded with comics I've sought out and want to read, y'know. So, I just never thought I would have the time or inclination to read this run. I know of it's importance, but there are TONS of important comics (or movies, or books, or albums) I haven't, nor probably will ever consume. Due to nothing else than finite time, and having a lot of things I want to give my attention.
However, the way bryan has been presenting these images has, not only made me realize how awesome these comics are (according to this reader's tastes), but have made me think that I might be ready to read them. Very slowly. I don't know if I'll read them all, but my library has the books, so I'm going to give them a shot.

Karma to you good sir. I think it is way cool that your library carries them.

Day nine issue nine: I love this issue. The FF are broke and hitchhike to Hollywood to make a movie. Classic.

Awesome... I love these classic "line-up" panels, where everyone get's a line. All the lines relate to each other, but it's not a conversation, really... they're each just expressing a personal viewpoint.
The modern style would be to break this up into a couple panels, to keep the action flowing and give the art a little more room to breathe... but it's interesting to look back on the classic style and see a different method of showing the passage of time using words and pictures. It doesn't all have to happen in the gutters. The way the bodies are angled outward towards the right edge of the panel points you in that left-to-right reading direction in a way that almost feels like movement. There's a progression here, a unmistakable flow. Meanwhile, each character gets to chime in as to their point of view on this unconventional situation.
Talk about maximizing space!

It's probably not comfortable, but I don't think it's necessarily painful... the pain would come from a high projectile object hitting a static object, the force of that impact. Remember, in the "elements" chart of the FF, Reed is water... if you shot a bullet into the ground, it would have a much different effect than shooting one into the ocean. His body is pliable enough to allow for the bullet, but it doesn't break his skin; rather, the skin folds over the bullet, swallows it. He can then expunge it without its ever having seriously hurt him. As for his internal organs, I don't recall that ever being explored that deeply... one of those "behind the curtain" things, where if you pick at the threads too much everything unravels a bit. Same thing with questions like "how does the Thing use the bathroom?" I do think we've gotten a few lines over the years that Reed's body is completely made of rubber, inside and out, but I feel pretty certain we've seen him cut and bruised at some point, so presumably he still has blood flowing through his veins?... [/nerd]

Day four issue four: Man, Kirby makes it hard to pick just one damn panel. So many choices it is unreal. No wonder Byrne homaged the image in the pages of Nice!

That was a pretty cool thing about the Concrete books: they often got into the mechanics of what it would be like to live in a body of stone, both physically and emotionally. But yeah, sometimes you just gotta roll with it. I was just curious whether it had ever been explained. Thanks for the answer and the physics lesson

Day ten issue ten: I had to break the rules on this one and show two panels. Reed dropping the knowledge about dinosaurs. Also in this issue Stan and Jack show up to retcon Doom out of outer space, Reed and Doom switch brains, a zoo is miniaturized, alien Ovoids, a Sue pinup and much much more.

Loving this thread, Bryan. I have been sitting on the new tpb of the MMW FF vol1 for a while now. I might have to crack that open sooner rather than later...
