Re: The aforementioned short fiction about Dunk and Egg are great. Though they aren't explicit in references, you still have to connect your own dots with dates and family names, there are numerous touches that the perceptive reader will take with them to the book series.

I do think the comics adapting them are pretty useless.

WHAT THE DEVIL. Back from the dead! Good sir since you've last posted I've finished the 5th book and started reading through the entire saga again

I had some questions for your opinion on some developments... now to dig them up.

While the Lannisters would appeal to me for the reasons Wood states (I'd throw in - though I think its connected with the rest - a leader who normal people don't trifle with).

I think I'd go with Dorne.

i just started on dance with dragons, and the TV show characters have replaced the characters i've built up in my head from reading the earlier books.

That's why I haven't watched a single episode.  My girlfriend doesn't understand this…we even have fights about it.  Sure, it may be childish to sit in the other room with a pillow over my head while she watches them, but I just don't want the best looking dwarf in London to be my Tyrion.  Is that so much to ask?

It's a good teaser that makes you feel for Stannis in a way I never did in the books (emotionally, perhaps rationally, yes). Not sure that's a good thing, but it's interesting.

Also let me add while Dorne is my choice for some reasons, a good argument could be made for Highgarden, specifically if you're part of House Hightower. Never hurts to have your education on.

Bring it.

Well for starters...

The Others -

Have they been seen since the first chapter of G.O.T? If so, it is slipping my memory. The creatures described in that opening chapter seem to be very different and have more cognitive abilities then the later appearances of what come to be called Whitewalkers. Are they the same as the WhiteWalkers? And are the Wights (specifically the ones that basically plan a sneak attack in the snowdrift in Dance W/ Dragons) the same as Whitewakers? There seem to be varying degrees of cunning for these creatures.

We have definitely see them since the  A Game of Thrones prologue, but we need to differentiate first.

I will admit my own knowledge is probably weakest to this (major) part of the storyline because I'm kind of dreading this element. The Wights are names given to those who have fallen to the Others/Whitewalkers (and were not burned). With that in mind, remember that a group of the Night's Watch were trying to overthrow Mormont at the wall, and Small Paul turned into a Wight after they were attacked by Others. This (Other) was the one Sam killed with the obsidian (dragonglass) dagger, but it should be noted it did not kill the Wight(ed) Paul. "Whitewalker" is  synonymous with Others. I think it's easiest to consider Wights as zombies created by the Others.

This group also led to Sam Tarly and Gilly into meeting Coldhands (as a reference point). Remember that Jon Snow earned his stripes by killing a Wight, saving the Lord Commander by burning his house down.

We also have the insinuation that Craster was sacrificing his sons to the Others, and they became Wights, or perhaps even Others themselves. The nature of the creation of the Others and their ability to procreate beyond the Wights is up for debate. It's very clear that the Others are much more cognitive than Wights.

It should also be noted that depending on POV, all of these are interchangeable depending on who is saying it (they are all just boogiemen up north, things from story to most).

The Others are also in Dance with Dragons. Recall the  Varamyr episode that left him trapped one One Eye (and later Summer).

If I had to join a house, it would definitely be Dorne... They seem slightly more reasonable then most of the others and their power base seems way more secure.

The Kindle e-book is free on Amazon apparently. Haven't tried it though since the wife left me and took all the iOS devices.

EDIT: Here we go...

 Yes

Every tv show and every movie should have him in the background somewhere dissecting an elk.
