I was worried they were going to cock that up, but it totally rocked.
Of course it's a smaller battle than the book, but it was superb to see it onscreen.

Amazing episode.
One little detail that I really loved was the portrayal of different types of leadership.
Stannis gives no flowery speeches and (callously) shrugs away the deaths of thousands of his men, but he also leads from the front. "Come with me and take this city!"
Joffrey is worse than useless, and runs away as soon as he's provided a convenient excuse.
Cersei throws a party because she thinks she has to provide an example, so that people will speak of the Queen's bravery. But instead she can't help herself, she gets drunk and makes a fool of herself then almost, almost loses her shit due to fear.
Sansa steps up to the plate, at least. When Cersei runs off from the party, Sansa takes control and calms everyone down, even though she has no reason to help these people.
The Hound, somewhat similar to Stannis, also leads from the front, but also inspires his men through fear and savagery; "Any man dies with a clean blade, I'll rape his fucking corpse!"
And finally Tyrion. Leads from the front because he has to, because there's noone else. He's in no way equipped for this, and he's clearly terrified, but he realises he has no choice. He delivers a rousing speech, but without resorting to cliches about the King, or honour. Instead of using nonexistent brawn, Tyrion uses his wits and appeals to something that will really move his men. This is their city, their home, their wives and children they are fighting for. "Those are brave men knocking at our door. Let's go kill them!"

"if any of you die with a clean blade, i'll fucking RAPE YOUR CORPSE!"
"those are brave men out there knocking on your door. let's go kill them."

I think martin Penned this weeks episode.
Love the song at the end!
It seems Rory McCann (Hound) actually sung this. It was awesome.

Good break down. I think you're leaving out Shay. I think she showed some leadership qualities that are based purely on survival. She gets by any way she can. And she's instilling a bit of that into Sansa.

This show has to have gotten the viewership to increase the episodes per season now. 10 isn't enough!

Was all set to watch this episode last night when I realized the during the recording, our bad rain storms jacked up DirecTV and there was a 22 minute chunk of the show missing. Set it up to record the episode again tonight, though.

I just read that seasons 3 and 4 will be based off of book 3, A Storm of Swords. That will at least give them a longer time before they catch up to the books. I had been wondering what would happen when they got to season 6 or 7 and the book hadn't been written yet. I'm sure they've given George R. R. Martin extra incentive to finish books 6 and 7 as fast as possible though.

I can't see him wrapping up the current storylines in 7 books... especially after the massive running-in-place we just got with 5. Most fan sites agree an eighth is an almost certainty... which means we might have a finished product before 2025.

If that's the case, then what do they do with the show once they catch up to the books?

Did he? I thought it was a version of the song by the National.

Perhaps the series will deviate from the books significantly, as has been the case with True Blood.
Or maybe Martin will provide the TV folks with access to his drafts to incorporate material as Elmore Leonard has with Justified. Or maybe the show will wait. Or maybe it will conclude ambiguously prior to the resolution of the novels. Regardless, the books will be done when they're done. http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2009/05/entitlement-issues.html

In Australia, the 3rd book was published as two separate books. "Blood and Gold" and "Storm of Swords".

I think I read somewhere (but don't know if it was an official source, or just someone postulating) that Martin would just tell the show where he was planning to go. That seems to make the most sense to me -- you give the showrunners enough information to hit the big plot points that are deemed important, and they can fill in the blanks as needed. But, I do think the show being so popular will probably light a fire under Martin to keep the books ahead of the show.

You know, I kind of hope they combine Feast and Dance into one season. IMO the show will loose a lot of momentum if they stay to the letter of the books for them two.

I think Feast and Dance will be multiple seasons but will probably pick from both books to tell it in a more chronological order.

This episode was AMAZING, and I'm not surprised when I saw that Martin wrote the episode himself. It's fascinating to see what they change, and even though much of it has to do with budget, they still make it work. This was a crowning episode for Cersei (and Tyrion, of course). Really got to see some of the reasons why the "Lannisters" are such a force to be reckoned with.
