I feel terrible about it. In the last decade St. Louis has lost Purina, MacDonald Douglas, TWA and Darci Advertising. About the only big companies left that call St. Louis home are Edward Jones and Emerson Electric. For a relatively small city that's pretty devastating.
We haven't exactly lost it... as all of the main components will still be right here in St. Louis...

Listening now...
The "Alex Ross is destroying comics thing" - I gotta say, when I read some shit like this, this is the sort of thing that makes me want to virtually give up on internet fandom (and I'm laying back a lot more), just because there's no fucking fun in it any more, other than the "debate"- and again, this debate seems foolish to me when equating high art in comics with whatever's being published by Marvel or DC-
(Let's sub-reference this- I've drawn a comic or two in my day, nothing that any of you have probably either heard of or give a damn about, but I've done it- I've drawn stuff that I've done strictly for hire and stuff that I own and I can tell you, at least from my end, there is a difference in how it's approached and how I would see one as me wearing a beret and being an "arteest" and the other to just get the job done. Now I certainly want to do a fine job on both and try to more out of a matter of professional pride, but at the end of the day, there's going to be one that I have to answer to someone else for and the other that I have myself to answer for- the one that I answer to myself for is the "art" that I'd strain over-- this isn't saying that mainstream produced work isn't good and isn't there to be admired, but to look at it as high art, especially when there's editorial or marketing or whatever that's there to compromise said work, just seems ridiculous and not really in a proper perspective- so there...)
Now I guess when you get to a certain status within the Big Two hierarchy, you've probably got a little more of a shot at being able to wear your beret, but you still have someone looming who can just totally compromise that work at any point.
Getting to the point of photo reference though, I've used it and I've not used it. I've absolutely no problems with using it or really with anyone who does use it as long as they get it to work with what they're doing- Ross uses it specifically with the stories that he's telling in mind and shoots it specifically for each job- there's nothing wrong with that and I know I certainly find it appealing to see- more of the complaining just seems like it's bandwagon jumping by fanboys who have to justify their likes more than anything else... this ain't a crime against humanity...
Probably more to come as I get deeper in the episode--

So were the covers for Spicy Tales. And come on, Femforce has been around since forever. And Planet of the Apes?
Dude, you sell yourself short.

Thanks guys, but honestly I wasn't trying to "fish" for that... but still it's appreciated...
My point was more in doing that from the perspective of someone who's drawn comics and made a buck or two at it... (though not for Big Bang, that was more for love of the game than anything else)

Still a loss for St. Louis and the US when a foreign company buys an American icon.

Continuing and finishing Episode 11...
I think this was mentioned earlier, but Final Crisis and Rann-Thanagar are both 40-page comics, haven't seen the others yet...
I gotta say, I agree with Wood, the average fan doesn't give a damn about an independent comics title, basically they're not popular and as such, there's no reason for the average fan to get behind them... quality? Hah! Do you really think they give a damn about that- only when they're arguing about an artist that works for Marvel and DC...
From my own end, I used to buy a lot more titles from Vertigo and Image and Dark Horse and the odder stuff than I do now, but over time, these books just got less and less appealing to me (more of them more for a fringe mentality than anything else), and I just found myself enjoying more the classic super-hero action that hooked me as a kid... It doesn't mean that I won't try something new, but it's got to appeal (BTW, I love Todd Nauck's Wildguard books)...
Comic book readers not only need to diversify, they need to grow a sense of perspective as well, and not get so stuck in the idea that what they're reading has to be loaded with bad-asses and "cool"... the wealth of material that's out there isn't just limited to what's made now...
Another good show, guys... keep it up...

My pleasure, I know I can sound pretty pissy, but it's not at all over you guys, it's more in just the prevalent attitudes that's out there now... Honestly, whenever I hear the 11 O'Clock show, it feels like I just want to jump in, and I really can't say that about too many other comic podcasts out there today...

Same with the Chrysler building. WTF?! This will end up biting us in the ass some day. Seriously, I feel like that is a major matter of national security. It appears that the enemy has finally figured out the way to beat down America. Not in a physical war but a war of economics. Scary feeling... Alec

Was it the music or the lyrics?
