A Mike Grell character from the eighties, he's a mercenary who also has a separate identity/career as an author of children's books.  He's not an amoral character at all and although he's freelance muscle, he is usually the good guy.

I haven't read Sable in years, but I've been curious about the character's return because one of the things that was interesting about the character (if I remember correctly) was that his adventures seemed to move in real time.  For example, he was an olympic athlete at the Munich games. I think he was in Nam or something too.  His first series ran through the eighties and would reference current events.  I got the feeling that the character was definitely aging.

So I'm interested in whether that's continued in the new books, because Jon would be closing in on sixty right now.  I'm not sure if a sixty year old mercenary could carry an ongoing series, but I'd be really interested in a "Jon Sable, The End" type mini series.

He's one of my favorite characters, and the one that made me truly dig Mike Grell's stuff.  Basically, he's Mike Grell's creator owned character, from back in my day of the early '80's, premiering then from First! Comics...the series went on a long time, until Grell stopped writing and drawing.  Sable was a freelance bounty hunter, with a rich supporting cast, lots of espionage intriuge, and a cool origin story placing him as a ranger in Africa until the poacher decide he needs to be taken out.  Globe-trotting action with a human touch, with fantastic Grell art.  IDW reprinted Grell's Jon Sable, Freelance issues from First a couple of years ago in 7 or 8 trade paperbacks....I loved the book so much, I bought the trades even though I have the singles. I can't speak for this new stuff, as I'm waiting for the issues to finish before I start reading, but I understand that these were free (?) on the web and are now being published in print...so maybe you can preview online.  Give it a shot! Thumbs Up

I took a quick peek through David's stuff and didn't see any Jon Sable.  It looks interesting and I got the feeling he was resurrected.  A sixty year old mercenary sounds as weird as seeing Sean Connery play James Bond now.  No shops close by anymore so looking this up to look through it may be difficult.  If you should read it, let me know what you think.

I think the 80's is when I lost touch with comics. My brother went into the service and he was basically my comic partner.  So with him in Germany I just lost touch.  It looks like I missed some good stuff.  So no one else has ever written a Jon Sable story?

Haven't read it, but I think Grell put it up somewhere to read online for free a while back.

Nice.  That looks great... feels like a time machine because it's definitely the same look/feel/vibe as the original Sable series.

Mark Waid: Thunderbolt’s mustache goes into the Negative Zone, where it enjoys its own separate adventures that will hopefully someday be told. Our Hulk needs no mustache. Muttonchops, perhaps.
