It's pretty kick ass and ideal for entertaining, so long as the coyote piss keeps the raccoons from using it as their shitter.

I STRONGLY recommend that you check out: http://www.munktiki.com/tikimugs1.htm Re: Daytripper. I dug this book immensely. When it comes to the direction of the next 9 chapters, I am thinking that they may follow in the footsteps of the Alice Sebold novel "The Lovely Bones". I won't explain the novel as to not spoil issue #1 of the comic in the process. the Tiki

I understand that some people are getting defensive over much loved comics of yesteryear, and I get it, Hell, I'll always stick up for them, but I think the whole argument overlooks the point. Better and sophisticated are two completely different things.
Are comics today more sophisticated? Yes. Does that make them better? Not necessarily.
It all comes down to taste, but like Chris said, the art of scripting the modern day comic IS much more sophisticated. First, they actually write a script. In the Stan and Jack day, it was a plot that was discussed, but little more than an outline, drawn and then dialogued. A guy like Bendis writes the full script, passes it to the artist, who adds their interpretation, and then when the art comes back, Bendis rewrites the dialogue, taking the artist's interpretation into the process.
There's no doubt that the process is more sophisticated. Are the comics better or worse for it, well, that's where fan taste comes in. I know this discussion has gone cold, but I just finished this week's podcast. And also just read a few issues of Essential Avengers (1960s Stan and Don Heck). As I was reading through, I certainly take Chris point, especially as it applies to the writing (someone is calling somone else a fool or knucklehead every other panel). BUT, the one thing that strikes me about the comics I read back in the day vs today is that issues of New Avengers take 2-3 pages cover material older comics would cover in 2-3 panels. I recall pulling my hair out reading Bendis' Might Avengers 1-6 and thinking he was stretching at best a 2 parter into 6 issues. That seems to be pretty common in recent years. In any event, the eras are certainly different, both have their stregths. And it is certainly nice in this day and age to have easy access to all eras. If I like the slower or faster pacing, i can just grab issues or trades of stories from any decade. Nice podcast guys. I hope you do a Christmas one. Enjoy the holidays Greg

I finally finished Ep. 87 today. (Postal worker. Busy. 'Nuff said.) Stellar as always. Vince is right on the money: Hanawalt's art is the most bizarrely gorgeous stuff I think I've ever seen. Words do not do it justice. I also just bought the Mantlo mag PDF. Thanks for the recommendation. And by the way, for those feeling charitable this holiday season, John Ostrander's glaucoma benefit site is still up and running, too. A million thank yous to Vince, David, Chris, and Jason for making 2009 so enjoyable. Happy Holidays! ... I gotta use it.... just this once....

Another great episode (still a bit behind here).
VinceB you're taste in comics scare me and yet after hearing you go on about them I'm oddly compelled to track them down and check em out for myself now. X-Factor IS the best comic I've read so far this year. (Shatterstar/Thing throwdown - AWESOME. I think SS is going to be my favorite character soon.) Great conversation about the "new" vs "old" dialogue and I got the feeling that VinceB and Chris were both sort of maybe saying the same thing kind of but not really. I'm still not sure.
That is all. Thank-you.
