I wish we could have gotten this back and forth between David and Vince on the episode rather than the forums. It would have made the episode a classic "Siskel & Ebert" type debate. the Tiki

Great discussion as usual guys. Thanks for posting that pdf Vince - looks great. I have to agree with David about The Spirit. I've always loved Eisner's work as well as Miller's but I could only watch about 30 minutes of that before having to turn it off.

Well, according to Tom Brevoort, when he replied to my scathing email ( ), it MUST be a defective copy. He claims his office copy has 22 pages of story. Weird thing is, it didn't exactly read like it was defective, although it did seem like Ben Urich jumped to some conclusions about Norman pretty quickly ( ). But even with the Hulk preview, which is what I thought they were trying to pass off as story content, I've only got 20 pages of comic, including the recap/title pages, but not counting the ads. I'm calling my LCS to get to the bottom of this. I may owe Mr. Brevoort a slight apology. Below is the email I sent and his reply. -------------- Dear Mr. Brevoort & Ms. Sankovitch, I just finished reading Siege: Embedded and I have never been so appalled in all my years of buying Marvel comics. Twelve pages of story for $3.99?!?! Abso-freaking-lutely ridiculous!!! You guys had better help to get your House (of Ideas) in order or you are going to start losing A LOT of readers. Starting with me. Seriously unbelievable!!! flabbergasted and feeling ripped off, Dallan J. Baumgarten Mesa, AZ ---------------- Dallan, If you got a copy of SIEGE: EMBEDDED #1 that only had 12 pages of story in it, then I don’t blame you for being upset. However, I just double-checked our office copies to be sure, and they all contain the correct 22 pages of story content. I’m not sure what might have happened with your copy, but you can send it back to me here at Marvel, and I’ll replace it with a complete one. We’re at: Tom Brevoort Marvel Comics 417 Fifth Aveune New York, NY 10016 Tom B

Just got off the phone with my LCS and it appears that the middle (3?) leaves were missing in my copy. I feel a bit silly but with all the recent price hikes, is it any wonder that I'm on edge about my favorite hobby?

It was a little too rapid to write an email like that, nonetheless it's the second time that an Siege related issue was defective. Is Marvel using a different printer for the event titles? Are there more incomplete Siege issues in posession of O'clockers? But does things happen, right?

But I actually came back to the thread for was to leave a comment on the part I'm hearing now about art first, story first, and Wood's question about who us oldtimers looked forward to on the shelves when we first started buying comics.
1) Vince, you begrudgingly gave Stan his props for the Jazzy Johns and Smilin' Stans and the Jack King Kirby. Dude, he still tweets like this. At 87 yrs old!! And of course my peeps have hung with him, and I've a buddy who works for him, and I've gotten all snuggly with him through my association with Dude with the big blue "F" slanted across his chest (see below) and I have to say--I honestly believe--that's just STAN. The man has been a churning huckster of comic schlocky goodness from the word go. He may have been a few other things too, but his creative core is the reason why we all know and love one another. He's the Iboga to my Adam Archer.
2) Awesome question Jason. Sparked my desire to come and respond here right away! I knew there was a reason I wanted you around!
3) So yeah, it was quite a little while before I realized who actually wrote by books and why I should care. I think it had something to do with the uniform quality of the books, though. They all seemed to be in the same mold and so one writer didn't always stand out or be distinguished back in the seveties. It always felt like only the scenarios the characters were in were the important things. Not what they said or how they said it, just what it meant when they were done saying it. I probably started noticing art styles first, and that would be Byrne, and then I started appreciating writing, ala Claremont, because of his Claremontese.

He's gonna do it! With his new, silky smooth swagger up to Marvel, get's your comic and helps Hickman and Eaglesham with dressing Sue in a fresh skintight dress.
