I know the identity of one of the deceased. Big deal. This character has been mishandled for years. Hopefully, when they decide how and when they bring the person back, they'll get it right and retool them closer to their roots. The original dudes that drafted the character knew what the hell they were doing.

DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kyle and Yost write the best dialogue you can just see and hear the anger, pain, and emotion in that one word line. Perfect. And how about Choi's panel of Hope holding Nightcrawler's body on the beach? So sad to see Kyle & Yost go.

I've been reading X men in trades too (until this event) and find I really like getting it in the big trade chunk. However, Second coming just hooked me from issue 1. I've pared down my pull list so I don't mind getting just the chapters (I won't be a regular New Mutants reader for example after this). I realized though that this whole death is a marketing ploy first--the X stories have been good enough lately that they don't rely on these kinds of tricks in the story itself. I was reading Uncanny, Cable, and New Mutants. I got event sucked into X-Force & Legacy. I dropped Uncanny, X-Force & Legacy and rode out Cable. I want to read New Mutants in issues, but had to pick up Legacy for the Karma/New Mutants angle/continuation. I'd rather have my titles be cohesive & self-standing. If this is going to be all event cross-over, should I just trade-wait on the whole thing or can I stick with New Mutants & have it make sense unto itself?

No, New Mutants is very much a continuation of a scene that cliffhangered in the last chapter of the event. Unless you want to see the NMs in mid mission. But the issue doesn't even end neatly. There's no way to read seperate chapters as standalones and be satisfied.

that sucks. I was enjoying New Mutants. These convoluted x-overs are what made me drop comics in the 80s. Why not put out one weekly X-book instead of requiring a periodic table & slide rule to figure out what the next chapter is.

1. Checklist in each issue 2. Chapter heading on the top of each issues cover 3. Promo cards sent to LCS with checklist on it 4. Small blurb and teaser image on the last page saying something to the effect of "..Check out New Mutants next week for the next chapter of Second Coming. 5. Internet What more can they do to aid you in knowing what books to check out for which events?

They shouldn't have to aid us at all. The writers & editors have a linear continuity in mind. Why does it have to convoluted in a x-over? Dude, I know. I've got my check lists. This is why this hobby is only accessible to the obsessive and not the casual passerby. Where else do you find publications that you need to consult an external list to determine the source of the next installment? "This week in Sports Illustrated... part one of an eight part interview with Barry Bonds. For part two see this week's Newsweek. For part three see Woman's Day. For part four read part eight and divide by two. Consult your local sports collectible shop for the rest of the list." Really?

you've been holding this grudge against X-men comics for 30 years? Dude let it go. so buying an X-book a week is o.k. You said it yourself. Does it really matter if it's Legacy or New Mutants or Uncanny if you are getting the next part of the story weekly. You would be spending the same amount of money anyway. When the event is over you pare your list back down to just the core titles that you want to get.

for this event I've essentially been ignoring the individual title names and treating it like a weekly Xmen event book--which it is. And a friggin kick ass one at that. The story is continuous, who cares what banner is on top of the cover? I only read Uncanny in trade, I don't even read new Mutants or the others, and I won't be starting after this. but I friggin love Second Coming and will keep reading.

I've actually been enjoying this story. I don't mind it being a cross-over. One book a week is no big deal really.
As far as the death goes, how can anyone at Marvel expect any of their readers to feel the emotional impact of a death at this point? The beloved character who died in the last book has been seriously ignored for years now.
I still think they're going to kill Cable though. They have to find a way to split up Hope and Cable and it seems as if the easiest way to do that in an X-Book is to just kill someone.

Just finished X-Force...I'm very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy this event. So much so that I actually looked at the checklist and questioned if I should get the books I'm not reading regularly. The answer was no, but I'm still loving the shit I'm reading.

As of Sunday Night, I am officially on board the X-men books. Until last year, my only knowledge of the X-men was from the 90s cartoon and the 3 movies. Last year I picked up Whedon's run on Astonishing and fell in love with Kitty. A few months ago I picked up Morrison's New X-men run based on a buddy's recommendation but stayed away from any of the current series because I hadn't heard anything great. When I heard Kitty was coming back, I jumped on Uncanny but when I heard about Second Coming, I swore I wouldn't get sucked into the cross-over and had decided to just hang on with Uncanny until Second Coming was over. Well yesterday my LCS had a sale and I made the surprising impulse decision to pick up the other issues of Second Coming. My conclusions: Second Coming is friggen awesome and I love the X-men. Bravo to all those involved because just as Sinestro Corps got me reading both GL and GL Corps, Second Coming has me reading every X-book for the foreseeable future.
