I thought Second Coming was great, it really felt like a conclusion to Messiah Complex which was great too.  My theory on Hope is that she's not related to Cyclops or any other X-Men but her powers are somewhat similar to Rogue's but much more advanced where she can call upon any mutant power from anywhere in the world.

Oh, you got jokes.
Hell, maybe she's Rogue and the Sentry's kid!

But you know, I like this one a lot--
The Scarlet Witch.  Hope's power appears to be the power to use anyone else's mutant powers.  Unlike Rogue or Mimic she doesn't have to touch them and can turn them off.  I think that Wanda has created her just like she created Wiccan and Speed.  Wanda probably made her to look like Jean to apologize to Scott for wiping out the Mutant race.  The Phoenix Force is likely attracted to her because of this.

I like that a WHOLE lot!!

I think Byrne wanted to kill off Jean around #150 & Claremont didn't want to kill her at all.
Jim Shooter, who must have family in the Shi'ar Empire, made them kill her off at #137.

My guess is that Claremont already had these stories ready by #137
& why wreck a good story by pointing out that
a character's mother died prior to her conception?

(Prior, huh  Thinking why does that name sound familiar?)

Having it so that Rachel always would have been from an alternate future
is, however, the only no-prize worthy answer.   Winner

The idea, as plotted by Byrne (not Claremont), was that the DOFP future would be a future that was averted. The whole point of the story was a desperate attempt by the future X-Men to change THEIR past and avert their horrible present. Of, course Claremont being Claremont could never let anything go, so after Byrne left, he used the simple, elegant closed loop story of DOFP as a seed to build a big convoluted, twisty mess.

The original plan was for Jean to be psychically lobotomized in #137. She wasn't supposed to die. Then, if I remember right for #150 Magneto would have nabbed Jean and offered to return the power of the Phoenix to her which she would have ended up nobly rejecting.

Shooter objected to Jean getting off without being sufficiently punished. He wanted her to be imprisoned and horribly tortured for her sins. It should be noted that this was after #137 had been completed and work was already well underway on #138.  Byrne and Claremont bashed their heads together for awhile and finally decided "fuck it, let's just kill her off," which Shooter agreed to. They redid the last chapter of 137 and the opening wrap-around sequence of 138 and moved on.
Also Rachel was never identified as Rachel SUMMERS in that story--although it can certainly be inferred that that was who she was originally intended to be--so as originally presented the story still works whether Jean lived or died. Of course, after Byrne left for the FF Claremont brought her back and id'ed her as Summers.

I finally read Uncanny X-Men; The Heroic Age.  I got all misty-eyed for real.  I never even realized Molly from the Runaways was a mutant. I guess most of them ARE if they are who they are because of their parents.  Stupid dumbhead Beast.  Nice prologue to the SWORD series though.  It should come back in a mini.

And okay, FINALLY. I accept that Hope is Hope.  Because now, yes. I'm invested in her as herself.  It just took the right story.  And clearly, NO ONE is saying ANYTHING about ANY physical similarity to Jean or Rachel. For WHATEVER suspenscioustm1 reason.

And three, "FIVE. LIGHTS."

I really was not a fan of the way Sanders drew Beast in SWORD, but for some reason I really loved it in this book.  Especially Beast's absurdly foppish outfit. Was Sanders getting wardrobe inspiration from Doctor Who?

Wow, now there's a way to get me to put the book way back in my Regina pile. Long snouted Hank dressed like Jonathan Pertwee?  No

You should read it, nevertheless (and I know you will, but sooner rather than later, I mean).  I was happier to see Sanders than Portacio.  But McKelvie sings.

It's not an anthology in the traditional sense.  There are no chapters separating the Cyclops, Beast/Molly, and Hope stories.  The stories jump around so you may get a few pages by Portacio, two from McKelvie, two from Sanders, and back again.

Just finished reading this today, including the Heroic Age one shot. From the beginning this has been so fun for me. It is absolutely every thing that I love about the X-Men. The only thing that I hope they don't leave in the air is why. Why is she connected to the five lights. It's obvious that she'll have some great power .. the rogue ability and the phoenix force are all nice and dandy. I want to know why her sudden appearance has created new mutants. She has to be something great and powerful. I'm guessing an all new phoenix force, that look she gave Emma in #2, there was something evil a brewing.

I hope "new."  The old had their chance.

Honestly, I don't even know who lost their powers.

*Looks around*
What am I even doing in this thread? I don't even read any X-Books (aside rorm Claremont's magnificently bat-shit crazy X-Men Forever).

From the X-men panel at Comicon Looks like these new mutants are appearing in Uncanny and then in their own series. Even if some of the old mutants got some of their abilities back they might not come back in the way they expect and would have to retrain themselves.

In that last panel, it showed the names and locations of the new mutants. They were none that I had ever heard of, so my guess is new.
