That seems odd and out of place to me.

I can't imagine it will stay that way, unless it is worth it to Marvel and DC to have another middleman, and not have to pay for the development and support of their own systems. If that's not worth it to them, I get it, but I just assume that at some point in the future you'll have a DC app and a Marvel app, built from the ground up by both publishers, that isn't tied to anyone.

I could be very very wrong though.

The only way I see it happening, which means it won't, is if the digital model changes. If they switch from a license tied to apps and instead supply a digital comic in a downloadable file be it PDF, CBR, CBZ, then they could cut out the middleman. They could just present a store front and you could then choose whatever reader you wanted and where you bought the comic didn't matter. If all the companies agreed on one format, then they could sell it directly while also allowing any company to sell it including your local comic book stores.

I think having to juggle multiple apps would be an even bigger turn-off. Imagine if the music you bought from iTunes was tied to an iTunes app, Amazon to Amazon's app, or Google's to Google's app without the ability to take it with you to the other services.

Do you think we're just going to end up with one online source?

Personally, I'd rather have a really good comic reading app that I could by content for anywhere.

I'm a big fan of using the various publishers' apps because I think you're less likely to "lose" your comics that way.  This kinda happened this year when IDW switched their app engine from iVerse (I think that's what it was) to a Comixology platform.  When they did that, they continued to "honor" comics bought through the old IDW app, but did NOT honor IDW comics that were purchased through the iVerse app.

To me, it's just playing with fire to concentrate all of your digital comics purchases on the Comixology or Graphic-ly apps.  I think the chances that publishers will change the infrastructure of their app and refuse to honor comics bought through the old version of that app are pretty small.  But, I think there's a decent chance that they'll not honor comics bought through the Comixology/Graphic-ly type apps.  And....there's also a chance that a publisher pulls all their comics from those types of apps too.

I like Comixology's products a lot, so I've got nothing against them but when you look at how rapidly personal electronics and software evolves, I'd be surprised if they are still the dominant player in 5 years.

Apple's iBookstore now has a standalone comicbook section.

The Beat reports:

Apple has just launched a separate comics/graphic novels section for its iBookstore. It’s a full feature sub-section includes an impressive Marvel bookstore, a “Comics Page” promotions for comic strip books, a Walking Dead section, and most impressively, separate promotions for CLEVELAND by Harvey Pekar and Joseph Remnant and Lela Lee’s FAIRY TALES FOR ANGRY LITTLE GIRLS.

. . .

UPDATE: Marvel has released information on its storefront, and more than 80 gns now available on the platform, including bestsellers Civil War Dark Tower and so on.

Only a few comics publishers are thus far available on the platform, including IDW, Marvel, and Image, via The Walking Dead. Disney, Norton and other book publishers are represented, however.

Thing is though anything bought in the comixology app syncs upp to the Marvel/DC/whatever app if it's powered by Comixology this also works the otherway around as long as the comic is on Comixology as well.

Yes....you are 100% correct.  But...what IF a publisher chooses to make their own in-house app?  Or what if they switch to a different company like Graphic-ly or some company that doesn't even exist yet?

I just think this thing is in its very early phases and it won't surprise me to see some of these companies go from being dominant to nothing.  Remember when everyone used AOL for internet access?  Or when everyone had Palm Pilots?  Or when Netscape was cool?  Comixology could end up joining those and I still want to be able to access my comics even if Marvel changes.

The new IPad screen is amazing for comics, and the updated app for comixology is not even out yet. The upgrade will support the retina display and they are updating all the comic files to HD.

But I don't think I will ever care about anything zoomed into that level because I don't read comics on my device in guided or panel view.

It is quality enough for my eyes.

I got an ipad (granted, an ipad 2 when they were new last september) at Best Buy 18 months no interest.  it's $30-$40 a month.  Skip a few lunches out a week and there's your ipad.

With this new screen, never a need to zoom, even on double page spreads. Everything just looks a lot better, and the text just pops off the screen a lot more. I'm just telling people, to get to a store and just see it with your own eyes. Hard to explain clarity with words.
