Finally got this imagine on my computer so I thought I'd share it with all my 11 o'clockers.  This is a piece I did for my dad as a Christmas gift this past year.  It was my first time painting with acrylics and the first time painting on a canvas.  The back story goes back to last years windy city con which I attended with my brother and father.  My dad saw this painting of Superman that was all dark and moody and he fell in love with it, so I tried to recreate it the best I could out of my mind.  I'm sorry I don't remember the artist name that did the original piece but maybe someone here remembers.   Rock Horns

Couldn't tell you the name of the artist, but you did a real nice job for your first time.

The yellows scanned brighter than they look in real life.  That's weird.

Thanks eva I had a lot of fun working on it.  Here's a picture of the original that I tried to copy.

And in my defense I didn't know we had a photo of it until after I was pretty far into my paiting.   Bangs Head

I just did another painting as a valentine present for my mom but I don't have a photo of it yet.  I'll post it later tonight or tomorrow though.

Did you paint the figures white or just let the canvas show?  I can't tell in the picture.

I painted them white but as you can see I'm pretty light of the paint all around so you can see some canvas coming through in places.

Ya I did, I started drawing it out Saturday night and painted it between work and dinner on Sunday.  I'd say I spent around 5 hours on it.

That's pretty good. I like that you used more than a flat wash of color in the background and in the figures. One thing you can do in the future to avoid those little bits of canvas showing through is to use a little bit of water on your brush each time you get some paint on it. The water helps the paint flow off the brush better and will help it get down into those little cracks. If you're using oil paint, use turpenoid, damar varnish, Liquin or you can mix your own thinning agent by combining turp, damar varnish, and linseed oil. Also, combining and mixing wet paints in the background will give you more depth and make it look a little more fluid and blended.
Keep painting, you'll find you get better each time.

Cool thanks, I'll try to incorporate some of that into my next painting which I'm just about to start.  One thing that always confuses me is how to paint the backgrounds.  Should it be done as an under-paint?  If so are you supposed to paint the background and then draw your foreground to paint?  Currently I've just been drawing everything out at once and then painting it all.

I'm, as usual, loving your very unique style, Timothy. You're our Jeff Lemire of the Drawing Board!  Thumbs Up

Here's two quick paintings I did over the last couple days.  Not as serious as the first two but still a lot of fun and if both give some interesting clues of my future projects.

I like the look of the super thin watercolors.
