I just learned this recently, so that's why I bring it up....Chris mentioned taking lots of Vitamin C before and during a Con to prevent the cold. However, scientific studies actually show that Vitamin C does nothing to prevent the common cold. I think it's a myth that started a long time ago and for some reason stuck: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_C_and_the_common_cold

Wood - a few of us on here have been agonizing about FFXIII and how quickly we "need" to pick it up. I'd be curious about your opinion when you've played it long enough to form one.

Wood - a few of us on here have been agonizing about FFXIII and how quickly we "need" to pick it up. I'd be curious about your opinion when you've played it long enough to form one. Not sure I can be objective. Here's the thing, I used to be an active console gamer, was never a big PC gamer. For some reason, the Final Fantasy series on the PS2 have always been my favorite. Immersive. Obsessive. So I've really missed these games. And as other interests/parenthood/career/comics have taken away my gaming time, I don't really mind. But every time FF comes out, I need to buy it and beat it and then that itch is effectively scratched. So then FF13 comes out and I am BEAMING. I race to Metacritic to read the reviews and I'm crushed b/c the reviews are the suck. As it turns out, people are complaining because the game is much more linear than it's ever been. The hours of meandering, exploring, leveling up, side missions, all seem to have gone by the wayside. I panic. THAT ISN'T MY FINAL FANTASY I tell myself. But then I thought, "wait a minute...I'm too busy to spend 70 hours leveling up for the sake of it. As long as it's still the same kind of game, with next gen graphics to boot, will I really mind if the game is more linear?" So I bought it. So far, so good. I will say that, early on, the fighting has been literally button mashing. You have an "Auto Battle" option that basically lets the computer choose your move. And pretty much it's simply a case of hitting auto battle every time your energy bar is full and you defeat any foe with ease. Maybe for one of the boss fights I had to make sure one of my trio was auto-healing us with potions. But I'm early on. Is it great so far? No. But I hear that after the first few hours it gets much better once all your leveling options and part/equip options unlock. The graphics are breathtaking. As always they balance familiar imagery and characterizations with a lot of new lore. I enjoyed the heck out of it the last two nights, but it's way too early to say how much the toned down construct will impact my ultimate enjoyment.

Three things about this week:
1) I didn't read much b/c I bought the one video game that I actually care about in my old age, the latest Final Fantasy
Does this install I haven't played it yet, this is my last straw ( I said that last time but I heard this one is mad linear so I'm giving my retirement a repass) please note I've played almost every single FF game made, NES, GB, SNES, PS1, PS2, GBA, DS, GC, and this one. No wii yet. But I'm getting bored with the storytelling troupes. That and the black guy in this looks wack.

I think it's a myth that started a long time ago and for some reason stuck: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_C_and_the_common_coldTo this, I would say, "kinda"... Vitamin C is no treatment for the common cold, or anything for that matter. It simply boosts your natural immunity, which in itself makes you a bit less susceptible to communicable illness. It's a preventative, not a cure. I'm my own case study on this... I used to get sick a LOT when I was younger, always having problems with colds and coughs and other stuff like that. I finally decided to start taking a daily Vitamin C pill. Since I started doing that 5 years ago, I've been sick exactly one time, and even that only lasted a few days (where it would have taken several weeks to clear up in the past) and came from being in the same house over the holidays with 4-5 sick people for nearly a week. Chris' advice to up your Vitamin C intake in the week prior to a Con is, in my opinion, sound advice.

How healthy do you think the average con goer's diet is under normal circumstances?

Hahah....well even considering that, I think the vitamin suplements are really intended for the elderly who have extreme deficiencies of vitamins.

Yeah, I mean, I'm probably an extreme case, because I get sick very easily... but I have a pretty healthy diet, and I used to get sick all the time. I'm not suggesting everyone take a supplement every day, but if you're going into a place where you KNOW there're going to be a ton of germs and bodies (like a Con), it wouldn't hurt to boost your immune system to help combat that. It's also not a bad idea to have on hand for when you're juuuust starting to feel yourself coming down with something... that little flush, that tingle at the back of your throat suggesting strep, that sort of thing. Taking a quick Vitamin C supplement can help prevent whatever's trying to get its hooks into you from being able to.

Not me, not for most of 2009 anyway...I am working with a dietitian referred by my doctor to change this. I doubt I'm the only 36-year-old with a history of bad habits such as grabbing a muffin or savory biscuit w/ coffee for breakfast in a hurry, on the way to a train or bus...lots of folks my age are carb/caffeine junkies, or maybe that's just the parts of Seattle I run around in. I don't see my daily multivitamin as absolutely necessary, especially now that I'm packing & eating green salads at the office every day...they probably help fill in some gaps here and there. I will have to ask the dietitian about it tomorrow. I don't know if my Trader Joe's Men's daily multi will have any protective effect at ECCC this weekend but I don't feel like a chump for taking it. I am hoping that my new habit of jogging for a half hour every weeknight listening to Lightning Bolt & Dinosaur Jr. will be a little protective though.
