Remember when our host said last week’s episode was shorter than usual? That’s not a claim that can be made this week.

It’s guest stars galore as Steve chats up Marvel miniseries with someone familiar to Marvel Noise listeners and our host talks about the first issues of the rebooted and relaunched and renamed Avengers titles with the number one Noise Maker, Derek Coward. Plus, Pat!!

Download.

for nothin'! Thumbs Up

Here's a cover gallery for my discussion with Adam on Marvel's first few years of 4-issue limited series!:

....and some additional supporting material for my 'afterword', with the ones we missed, a couple of George Freeman covers, and a bunch of Mike Mignola's covers from his earlier days at the House of Ideas!:

Enjoy!

I'm putting my 'is it ditko' quandry up on the main board to increase the pool of people who can tell me I'm nuts Evil

I give myself props. I've done such a good job not letting you raise my blood pressure, Derek, and now I finally know why.  You thought Captain America should have been the pro-registration guy.  And that does corrolate--Tony Stark, being a capitalist millionaire, would surely want the government out of his personal affairs.  Why did I not hear that from you all this time?  I wouldn't have avoided all your talk on Civil War.  But you kept chasing me away with your effluvient praise of the douche Stark had become, and your concurrent re-assassination of Steve Rogers (well, his character, anyway).  But why not heap that on the writers instead of the character? Or had you, and I missed it?

Anyway, awesome surprise to hear this Derek/David dialog and man o man, THANK you for frontloading this one.  Out-of-the-gate awesome.

Had I not mentioned Steve and Adam while I was talking to Derek I probably would have waited until next episode to air it.  I also didn't expect us to talk for so long.  But I'm glad we did.

Huh? I have been saying since the beginning that they were on the wrong side (capitalist BILLIONaire vs government lapdog is how it should have been all along), but since it wasn't Rogers should have played things smarter. Tony Stark was always fighting his side of the war on multiple fronts, Rogers should have been. Instead of turning his supporters into fugitives, he should have been fighting to get the (obviously unconstitutional) law overturned by the Supreme Court (the most likely), stalled by Executive Order (a very long longshot since the President had to have signed the bill to make it a law), or repealed by Congress (which is what I think they did in the end).

I have also said on a number of occasions that Bendis should have written Civil War instead of Millar (who should have written House of M). Millar is like a lot of foreign writers, he has an odd view of Americans and their relationship with America as a concept. It comes across like he thinks Americans are either/or types of people with no sense of subtlety or irony.

On top of that I have hated how Post-CW writers have turned Tony Stark into a whipping boy. Everybody either tells him off or punches him. And he takes it.

So yes, I think you just missed it.  Kiss

I guess this makes up for last week  Wink feast or famine. This is going to take at least another day to get though. David and a guest nice! Enjoyed it so far even if I don't agree with everyone and that seems to come bubbling to the surface and the Civil War rehash stuff. I  Hearts Kang, Thunderbolts, and haven't had my fill of Steve Rogers.
Marvel could put out some Thunderbolts trades around now collecting at least the first 50 issues. That would be great. They only had that trade back in the day that collected their earliest appearances and a few issues of their series.

I think the Avengers are fine without the Big Three or at just one of them on the Avengers unless fans have changed again and need all three now. There's been times in the past where they were pretty diverse.

I'm glad Thunderbolts was brought up as not being an Avengers title. Luke Cage doesn't make that big of a different to change into an Avenger title. I don't even really think of Secret Avengers as an Avengers title with having read the 1st issue. Seems marketing to me and could have been named Defenders for all I care.

Huh? I have been saying since the beginning that they were on the wrong side (capitalist BILLIONaire vs government lapdog is how it should have been all along), but since it wasn't Rogers should have played things smarter.

I trying to figure out which is Cap and which is  Iron Man in this. Since neither are a government lapdog and then they end up being both on the same side. They have certainly clashed before. Cap's all about the dream. I think some of the reasoning after Civil War for why Tony did what he did has been better than Civil War which is kind of unfortunate,  Invincible Iron Man all the way there.

Looking forward to listening to Raker & the crew tomorrow and extra length will get me though not having a Smash Tales this week.

I believe that.
I was heartened to hear you give some positivity towards Steve Rogers (with the pose he struck after the barfight in Avengers Prime #1), and I'll hold onto that from now on.  Whistle

The Marvel Miniseries could not have been covered by any better two men. I'm surprised tears of joy didn't streak my face by the time of that segment's end. Adam, I have just four words for you--"New. York. Comic. Con."  Steve Raker will be there!  A real life roundtable, man.  And our birthdays.  Whaddaya say?  We'll even let the 11 O'Clock Quartet drop by if they would like.

Your conversations were pristine, David, Derek, Steve and Adam.  A real privilege to be let in there. Thanks way much.   Hearts Hearts Hearts

It could be said that Tony Stark represented the privatization of American interests by the corporate elite, and perhaps that Cap represented the ideals of our founding fathers fighting to overcome the powers of fascism. However, the way it was written put Rogers into an unwinnable position, where he was forced to choose between hunting down his friends or becoming a fugitive himself. When given no other option, there was no way we were gonna see him turn on his friends. Marvel wanted him on a certain side of the Civil War and that was the simplest way to get him there.

I must be doing something right because there are three plus hours of comic podcast goodness for me to enjoy.   Thumbs Up Boogie

I have only started this epic odyssey but thought I would post up some thoughts.  I also feel like Spider-man is never really part of any team book but instead it is just a really long guest star spot.  It just feels better that way.

I really like Dr. Strange as a character but only like him as a part-time team member (for something like the Defenders which never seemed like a permanent team but just got together for certain instances).  I also don't like how it seems like the Sorcerer Supreme is always human.  I thought they were supposed to be defending the whole dimension.  I know Earth 616 is the center of everything but I would like an alien Sorcerer Supreme.  The Sorcerer Supreme should be about challenges that threaten the whole dimension, like Dormamou (or however you spell it).  I liked when he had that alien, cow-looking apprentice.  Like some people feel about the Fantastic Four, I think the Sorcerer Supreme should be cosmic and big in scope.  Not just always on earth dealing with our petty issues.

Very excited about the rest of the episode.  Loving the covers, posted by Mr. Raker.  I have one other thing that I will post in the main forum as its own thread, hopefully I can figure out how to create a poll!  Thanks again.

I had to cut some music to finish this mammoth session of Marvel Noise today. Hearts That was some good stuff.

I always think of Spider-Man as a Reserve Avenger. He will always show for their big meetings or called upon but never really part of the team and too involved in some street level stuff. I probably get that from when I started reading comics. On that same topic Wolverine still doesn’t feel like an Avenger to me but I have no problem with the Beast.

Could that Hawkeye & Ronin thing have been more confusing

With all that discussion of Marvel mini’s I was surprised at how many I’ve picked up for a $1 or in 25-cent bins. Apparently I like to buy them but don’t get around to reading a whole lot of them. That Nightcrawler mini being a prime example since I bought those bundled together. It seems like Marvel likes collecting them too.

Having virtually no experience with Gargoyle I thought it’s strange that had a limited series but I haven’t read much Defenders either.

I was checking out when Wolverine’s ongoing and Havok & Wolverine: Meltdown were published and it looks like the same month. I thought that was earlier.

I was all over getting that Hawkeye Premiere hardcover because I wanted the mini and it wasn’t just the mini in an high priced package. I didn’t need his first appearance in there, but Avengers #189 was all right to include even though I had it but not in a collection. But including Marvel Super Action #1 and Marvel Team-up #95 put it over the top for me. I never knew Gruenwald could draw until I saw that mini.

I’ve seen the Annihilation Classic HC on the cheap several times now and always pass on it for something better because I’m not a big fan of piece meal collections. I’ve had every intention of picking it up and then when the time comes I don’t when I break down the issue cost per issues with what’s collected. Maybe hearing about the Rocket Racoon mini will push me over to get it next time. It weirded me out that Mignola was involved with Rocket when I found out.

Finished the episode and it was loads of fun.  As far as I am concerned, you guys can go all day.  Really enjoyed the walk down memory lane with the '80s limited series.  If Steve Raker ever becomes a superhero, I am sure the story about the comic printing error will play a key part in his origin.  I can see some nefarious villian going around randomnly re-arranging the printing order of certain key comics.  But that issue must be a collector's item, I bet you your issue could clear a cool $2 or $3 dollars if you can find the ultimate Jack of Hearts fan.

I also liked that we got a little coda, clearing up any issues from our Tales from the Bunker.  Nice to hear from Mr. Loika again and always happy to hear about future podcast roundtables.

I also picture Mr. Raker's family and friends huddle around the entrance to the bunker, asking each other, "What does he do in the bunker all alone for hours on end?"

I think The Steve Raker will be proud of me today. I pulled Strange Tales Featuring Warlock #178-180, The Power of Warlock #5, Warlock #10, 13, 14 from the cheap bins at the lcs today for $1.40. I was hoping for a full run since I found so many other things in there. I guess I still have to buy that Warlock Masterworks but .20 cents a pop I couldn't say no and they have that old comics smell to them.
