Great show- good epsidode.
But it was killing me every time you said the word Asgard,
I am pretty definite when I say this after hearing multiple creators pronounce it- and really the lack of the second S in the word.
It is not Ass-Guard
It is correctly pronounced as Az-gard
Assgard ? Really?
I think ASSgard is a whole other place entirely.

I was sceptical about Bulletproof Coffin #1 so I didn’t order it. Figured there was a good chance I wouldn’t enjoy it. It would be too indie or weird or something. I thought I would give the first issue a shot since Cbr had the whole first issue up. I gotta say I enjoyed that and the beginning reminded me of I Zombie with colours and art. Looking forward to listening to whole show on Saturday to hear about it.

It is in fact As-guard, as in "like or as", or Az. I lookt it up. BUT... Ass-guard is funnier.

So you've been reading comics longer than most people attend college...
My point is that readers are usually smart enough to jump into a comic without tons of character stuff. Don't get me wrong. IF a book is all about character moments like Blankets, Essex County etc I can understand. These are fucking super hero books. I don't believe people really want to know what Spider-Man or Luke Cage think about Oprah's Book Club. If Bendis wants to write character pieces he needs to move to a different sandbox. Like I said, I love that stuff in Powers. Not The Avengers.
Fair enough. I'm not a Bendis fan either, but I think dialog heavy scenes do have their places in Avengers. It's just a matter of finding the right balance. If you're too dialog heavy, you end up like Bendis Avengers. If you're too action heavy, you end up with Jeph Loeb Hulk (or so I hear).

You mean the writers of Jonah Hex?
Nice. Yes, they have a writers' credit on Jonah Hex. From what I've heard, and I'm obviously not an insider, is that their script was massively reworked. They were originally attached to direct also but had the dreaded "creative differences" with Brolin and the producers and walked away. Overall, I don't think what ended up on the screen could accurately be called a Nevaldine and Taylor movie.

I'm thinking/hoping that the caller's persona is an elaborate hoax. I like how he bitches about all the stuff the guys do wrong (not making sense, Wood speaking another language, etc.) and letting them know how they can keep the show good (never let Chris skip a week) and then telling someone else who had called in to tell the guys what they thought about the show to shove it because the guys should do whatever they want and the show's awesome. Is this the "bumfuzzled" guy? I'd prefer a call from Stan Lee, myself.

I'm thinking/hoping that the caller's persona is an elaborate hoax. I was just going to post something similar. I think a lot of what he said was tongue in cheek. Who knows? He's never on the forums as far as I know, so we don't have much to go by. Is this the "bumfuzzled" guy? I don't think so. Now that guy was serious, and seriously annoying.

I totally agree that there isn't an invalid interpretation, just like there are multiple interpretations of most of these characters... and I'd just see the flick as one more interpretation. This one doesn't particularly grab me, though, because it seems to ignore all the things I think are cool about Jonah Hex. If I hear to the contrary, I'll give it a shot... but, so far, the best I've heard is "It's not as bad as everyone's saying." What are those things that you think are cool about Hex? Just curious. I say this because, most of the times in this kind of conversation (just using your post since it came up), it's easy to say what the movie/preview has that's keeping people away - but I rarely see what it is that it doesn't have which keeps people away. If that makes sense. By the way, I'm definitely in the "it's not as bad as everyone's saying" category. But then again, neither is plucking a nose hair. Doesn't mean I wanna do it over and over.

Great podcast. I love listening to you guys arguing about Bendis comics.
I have a feeling Chris won't like Avengers #2. That shit was Sentry: Fallen Sun bad.

Ha! In other words "I still ain't gonna see it". Brat. Here's a question - you say nothing else told you this was Jonah Hex. What else other than the face IS there to Jonah Hex? Confederate suit? Check. Rides a horse? Check. Ummm.... beyond that?? He may be in a more-serious "western" comic now but that hasn't always been the case. And I don't mean the Vertigo series either. The way the conversation took place on the ep, it was like there was a "defense" of Ghost Rider with exceptions/liberties while striking Jonah Hex down for the same reasons and it seemed way contradictory. Raising the dead, Bond-like gadgets and horse-mounted Gatling guns sounds like it fits under "liberties" to me. Or the futuristic Hex. This is a character that has tales in a book called "Weird" Western Tales. He's met Green Lantern and the Justice League. He was in the Crisis! Hex is about as close to a super-hero western comic that you can get (well, until Guns of Shadow Valley came along ) Now THERE'S a movie I'd see - liberties and all!

Listened to the second half of ep 114 on my way home (after stopping off at the liquor store - I have to work form home Friday because of the G20). - Hour 2 Drink Roll Call: Me: Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale - Q: Is it me or theres a buzzing sound in the back groud? Oh well, it must be the Keith's - re: Whitehead's voice mails. He was animated no doubt, but i though he had a few valid comments. - Really enjoyed the discussion on writing styles in the modern era (Avengers, FF, etc). Good discussion, but in the end, I think Chris is dead on. Particularly with the BMB writing style. If you like it, great. But it is what it is. And yes, i agree the Big Two are writing for long time readers. I am not saying they should, but I think they are. - (Chris - don't let your brothers fool you - New Avengers 1 was exactly like the past 40 issues of the last New Avengers series. They upgraded the kitchen table for a Dining room table, but otherwise....you know....). - I rolled my eyes at the Secret "Silhouette" Avengers comments. Guys......it's a book about a covert ops team where most of the issue took place at night. Would you have them wear pink and yellow outfits and only operate in the sun? Anyway, I think it is solid. - King DAP: Karma for slipping in the Contest of Champions comment! Peregrine!! Shamrock!!! But it was killing me every time you said the word Asgard, - Ha. It was cracking me up as well! AssGuard.....tee hee. - Good talk on the Thor. i might have to pick those issues up. Good episode. I loved everyone, but i have to give the episode MVP to Chris. I hope we are back to regular shenanigans with Wood next week. Cheers fellas. Have a great weekend. Greg L

Waitasec.... hang on.... Vince just said "You don't use too many exclamation points when you write because it's just... stupid."
There was once a great man who walked this world whom I consider to be a master of comic book art, and he was only aware of four punctuations: the question mark (?), the exclamation point (!), the double exclamation point (!!) and the supremely awesome supreme triple exclamation point (!!!). This man was called Jack Kirby, and for him the period did not exist.
Oh and great show guys. Even one man down you continue to entertain. Huzzah!

Definitely was a noise going on in the background. Or it was subliminal messages via Vince to have us read the AdHouse book.

I think the reality of the situation is that they won't run their businesses like that, not that they can't.
You may recall my desire to sell resin figures of my own design. I've done my homework on the production process, calculating the cost of the materials, the time it would take me to produce varying number of runs, and what it would cost me to package and ship the things. If I priced the things in accord to what other creators get, I could easily sell them at $50 a pop. I refuse to do that. I know what each would cost me in materials and labor and, in my opinion, $25 is more than fair. Believe me, I wouldn't be losing money on that deal. So why do the other guys charge $50? Because their sound designs and production standards have earned them good reputations, sure, but the real reason is because they can, and their runs sell out every time. I realize that's how business is done, but not for this guy. What's so wrong with charging a reasonable price for a product? But...but...but...you could be making twice as much for your art! Yeah, and feeling like a thief in the process. Not worth it to me.
A VinceB resin pagan idol? No price is too high.

Definitely was a noise going on in the background. Or it was subliminal messages via Vince to have us read the AdHouse book. I wasn't aware of it at the time of the recording, but something kicked my mic level down to almost zero in the System Prefs. In order to compensate, I had to amplify the shit out of the recording. Combine overamplification with fairly robust noise removal filtering, and the result is a slight ring/buzz. Every time. Since I'm off to Hershey Park tonight with the kids, it was either release the episode band-aids and all or shelve it and skip a week. We're not down with the skipping, sooooo...
