Hey Guys,

I will study one semester in Melbourne starting next week. So, the obvious question is:

Do any of you know any good comic shops in the city? To feel at home there, I really need a LCS for my every week Wednesdays.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Would you be studying in Melbourne, Australia Homer?

There's a Melbourne in Canada I think too, so just making sure.

In case its Melbourne Australia:

(Melb CBD)
There's the largest, Minotaur, on Elizabeth Street, between Collins and Little Collins street, across the road from EB games. They usually get everything thats released each week, and in fairly large numbers. BIG trade section and good for everything else pop culture related too. Bit impersonal though, I find. There are certain people that work in the comics part of the store that don't really help you all that much, but others are great.

There's also Comics R Us at 1/220 Bourke St, Melbourne. This ones a little harder to find, as you have to go up a flight of stairs to get to it. This store is run by a good group of guys and it has a great community feel to it. Really helpful when you have questions, but they don't always order everything that's released, as they are a smaller store and limited by shelf space.
Comics R Us also has a store at 114 Chapel St. this is outside of the CBD, but I dont have a lot of experience with that store. It is larger than the city one though.

Also at 76 Chapel Street is Alternate Worlds. Again, as I do most of my shopping in the CBD, I only venture here when theres a sale on. nice big store with a wide range.

Um, thats it. If you were asking for another Melbourne, apologies! If you are in Melb, be sure to also check out the Tim Burton exhibition at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

If you can you should come up to Sydney in The begining of august. Flights are pretty cheap. The Oprea house is hosting a cool event On the weekend of the 7th and 8th called Graphic. Eddie Campbell and Gaimen will be guests and a cool screening of Akira is happening among other things.

Thanks for your posts. Yes, i meant Melbourne, Australia.

@ Symon:

They all seem not that far away from Uni Melb campus. That's great. What do you mean with CBD?

@ Lukeh:

Sounds very interesting and Sydney is definitely on my list of places to visit. I'll arrive in Melbourne the coming Thursday. If I can find some fellow comic geeks quickly to come with me, I'll go there.

Sorry, when I say CBD, I mean Central Business District, so the city centre, not the outlying suburbs.

Yeah from Melb Uni, its just tram ride or walk into where the shops are to get your comics.
Are you an overseas student, or from another part of Aus?

Also, if you're here in october, Armageddon expo is on
http://armageddonexpo.com/au/
Darick Robertson, Daniel Way, Ron Marz and Georges Jeanty!

I'm from Germany. I'll study at Uni Melb as an exchange student for one semester.

I'm there in Oct, I'll put Armageddon on my schedule. Just for George Jeanty. Maybe I should pack less clothes and more Buffy comics, so I have something to sign.

My local is Classic Comics. Cheapest books in town. 7/50 Bourke St. A little bit harder to find than other shops, as is actually on Liverpool St. Great staff.

Cats Cradle Comics...which is now called Evil Empire comics is at 36 Sydney Rd Coburg. Can be a bit confusing as Sydney Rd has the same set of street numbers twice depending on which suburb you are in. This shop is past just Moreland Rd. Very easy to get to from Melbourne Uni, you can catch the 19 tram to from Royal Parade which will basically take you to the front door. Great store which is basically all back issues and trades and very reasonably priced.

I wouldn't bother with Minotaur as it's greatly over priced and as Symon said the staff are generally very rude and unhelpful. Alternate World's is what Minotaur should but focused almost completely comics. Can't recommend the place enough, great staff as well.

I live about five minutes walk from Melbourne Uni if you ever want to talk comics or go on a comic bender.

There is also Collector's Edge - 14 Everage St, Moonee Ponds. Small store, limited monthly range but has a lot of back issues, $1 bins(which don't really exist here as much as they should) and always few boxes of cheap trades. A really good place to go and you always walk out with some really good trades, etc.

Ford, regarding Classic Comics...
Are they good on trade prices?
I was dismayed to see that the latest invincible iron man Hard cover was 31.99 at minotaur when its listed as 19.99 US. should only have been 25 or so.

Trade prices are good, that HC would be $25, maybe $26.
Alternate Worlds Trade prices are pretty good most of the time but their new issues a bit more.

Hey, Always love having new comic readers in my home town!

Best place for floppies in my opinion is R US on Bourke, right near the JB, as Symon pointed out the guys in there (Mitch Mark and Troy) are all great blokes and i consider them good friends, its my LCS. (altough i think the city store is bigger the the chapel one)

Classics at the end of bourke is always my second choice if i need something R US can't get (which is rare) also really nice guys, i've gone out for beer and dumplings a few times with luch, always a friendly face.

Alternate Worlds is great for hard to find stuff and sales but are a bit out of my way.

Collectors Edge where my first comic shop, i breeze past them on slow days to check out there famous Dollar bin  (as pointed out there rare here) but also a great Discount trade bin

Minotaur is a strange one, its more of a "Comic Department store" then a "Comic Shop", and while i myself have never had bad service there, Ante is the only guy there that i would say goes beyond the regular customer service requirment.

Got to say didn't realise there where so many Melbournites on this board, maybe we should work out a beer run when you settle in, few of us Aussie guys from the comic geek speak boards hit the pub from time to time,  Nothing better then comic talk and a VB

Yes, beer and comics. I love that combination. Let's do this. Should we set up a date? Next week on Wednesday for example, first shopping, then drinking. Just to see if anybody has time. We can confirm next week and make the time more specific.

I'm up for a meet up in the next couple of weeks. Was also thinking of bringing along a box of singles and a few trades to give away as well.
