Where to start with Doctor Strange's early stories?

I know there are both masterworks and essentials of the early Dr Strange stories but was wondering which (if either) 11'oclockers would recommend. I read the mini series Marcos Martin drew a few years ago and loved it, and really enjoy him him as a supporting character but have never read any of the original stories.

By the Moons of Munipor, I'd strongly recommend going right back to the source: Dr Strange Marvel Masterworks vol.1, which is available in softcover, too. If you dislike 10 page stories or vintage/classic Marvel from the '60s, try the Frank Brunner drawn stuff from the '70s collected in the 'A Separate Reality' trade paperback. If you like single issues versus collections, try any of Roger Stern's run on Doctor Strange from the '80s, with pencillers such as Marshall Rogers, Michael Golden, Dan Green, and Paul Smith!
Forumite L.A. Rabbit and I covered the first MMW over two episodes of Marvel Noise in recent months, if you wanna get an idea of the type of stories within:

I just reacquired these issues last Christmas and highly recommend them. One of my favorite Marvel runs from the early 80s.

I second all of this, in particular the recommendation of the Brunner run. I love his take on Doctor Strange

Thirding what Raker said--especially in regards to the original stuff. You gotta have some Ditko in there.

Fixed. Hee, hee. Just joking. I like all Dr. Strange but the Ditko stuff is fun. At least take a gander at it. Super Steve posted some nice scans from those old tales. If you don't like it, then go with the the newer stuff. No charge to look.

The first essential is great. Strange fights abstracts and the devil and occasionally cracks a ruffian in the face.
