Straight edges....
« on: 04:04 PM | Friday, April 29, 2011 »

Hey everyone. So I've been using a Hunt 102 crow quill pen nib for a bit now, and after an initial false start with the ink flow (turns out the ink was just too thick. Added a couple drops of water and it now flows nicely), I've found that my straight edge is allowing ink to get underneath it, smudging the line when I remove the straight edge!  Bangs Head Luckily, it was in a spot that I could turn the smudge into something workable.

Anybody have any thoughts on what I should be looking for in a straight edge so that this won't happen in the future?

Cheers.

I use a triangle (usually a 30º 60º 'cause it is a bit longer) placed on top of a second triangle so there is a healthy gap between the edge and the paper. Works great.

They have rulers / triangles / tsquares etc. with offset edges specifically for inking

I really thought this was going to be a thread about Youth of Today, Judge, etc.

Guess I missed that it was from the Drawing Board.

Ha.

Oh well, enjoy this video.

A cheap solution is to just take whatever you're already using, and putting a few layers of masking tape on it in such a way so that it raises the straight edge but doesn't come into contact with the edge...used to do that my own self back in art school.

Cheers for the tips guys. Link looks promising, and I'll be sure to try out the masking tape.  Thumbs Up

Every stationary store over here stocks metal rulers with a strip of cork not quite as wide as the ruler on the underside, usually for the same price as a steel ruler. It's capillary action between the ruler and the page that sucks tiny amounts of ink under your ruler. Grab a cork-backed ruler or make sure the masking tape isn't touching the leading edge of your ruler.

Some people - especially if they use a brush - wrap their fingers under the ruler so the ferrule is guided by the ruler. It's a tricky thing to get used to, but if you give it a try a few times, it's pretty great. http://geek.focalcurve.com/archive/2005/07/inking-a-straight-line/ this guy isn't quite doing it the way I was shown how to do it, but it's pretty similar.
