I absolutely stand by year one too. I personally, on second reading, really struggled with DKR and couldn't even finish dark knight strikes again.

I think Year One is more of a timeless classic, while Dark Knight Returns is very much of its time. Don't get me wrong both are terrific, but Dark Knight was full of 80s politics and beliefs. Year One is simply a classic origin story. To me, this is why Year One holds up better.
