Rocketo
« on: 09:06 PM | Monday, June 21, 2010 »

So, after a cursory search, and only finding references that are mostly over a year old, I think I'm in my right to start a thread dedicated to this wonderful title!

I was visiting NYC this weekend and stopped into Midtown... to my astonishment, I found both volumes of Rocketo on the shelf.  I know it's easily attained at Amazon and such, but I've never seen it in person.  And believe me, once I held them, and saw its delicious, sprawling format, it was a no-brainer dropping $40 for these.

Half way through the first book and I'm convinced that this will find it's way at the top of my all time favorites list.  Just astounding artwork and the writing is at the same level.

I'm hoping there are some fans that can help me out here... I know it was planned to go another 36 issues but I can't find a thing on this.  Even its dedicated Image message board has been removed.  I surely hope there's more stories to tell because this is some incredible comics!

I have no idea.  I read the first volume and quite enjoyed it.  I always intended to keep reading, but I guess it fell off the top of my mind.

Espinosa has a blog where occasionally he posts a bit about the state of Rocketo.

I  HeartsRocketo. *karma* Such style and adventure storytelling. I even have some of the speakeasy issues. It's in my group of books if they ever came out monthly with the rest of the group I would be swamped.

Rocketo was an awesome series by Frank Espinosa that came out about five years ago.  He published 12 issues; they were supposed to be the first of four stories about the main character, Rocketo Garrison.  They were gorgeous (see the art below) and it was just a really awesome story.  If you haven't read it, do yourself a favor and look for the issues or the two trades that reprinted it.

Anyone else have fond memories of this series?  Anybody know what Espinosa is up to these days?  Will we ever see more Rocketo?

Oh heck yeah. That was a great series. I have some of the aborted run from Speak Easy as well. Good adventures comics with a unique style and maps. I figured at some point there would be another.

Holy crap!

I picked up volumes 1 and 2 of Rocketo at Half Price Books the other week. The oddball trim size caught my eye so I flipped through them and the art really grabbed me. I finally got around to reading it when I was out of town last week.

Fucking hell!!

This book is exactly what I want from stories. Not just comics, fiction. Swashbuckling adventure, immensely creative worldbuilding, a real sense of history and mystery, compelling and humorous characters. Plus, Frank Espinosa's art is unbelievably brilliantly good. Unbridled creativity straight on paper.

If you've never read it it reminded me a lot of Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Skies of Arcadia, Indiana Jones, with even a little Tolkien thrown in there.

I wen't online today and was heartbroken to find out that the two volumes I had were the only ones that have been published so far. And vol 2 came out in 2007! Anybody know what the deal is with the rest of Rocketo? What's Frank Espinosa up to these days? Anybody else love this book as much as I do?
