I think the first work of his that I read was actually "Comics and Sequential Art". Then shortly thereafter I went through some of his Spirit work and a few of the "city life stories" (Contract with God, etc.). I agree with Farrell's comment regarding Eisner's reverence for the art form. That is something I always appreciated, which was very apparent in his work.

Minor Miracles is my favorite Eisner work (I really need to read that one again). For me, Eisner drew the best faces I've ever seen in comics. You can actually see what they're feeling.
