some young girl sold a ton of her trashy teen romance(and possibly vampires?) novels digitally and made a million dollars or something like that.

Even though he only makes 35¢ off every sale, that's nothing to sneeze at Thinking

Good for him! I like hearing about creators like him and Amanda Hocking who had the motivation and balls to forge ahead instead of letting the system block their way.

I was listening to Planet Money the other day, and they were talking about how the digital revolution may be a good thing for music. They were looking at a case of a guy who writes nerd-chic music, and makes a really solid living off of doing so. The panelists, however, were saying while his case was great, it isn't endemic of what's possible for the whole industry.

That got me to thinking. I think Marvel and DC will be greatly benefited from offering their wares digitally, but I think we're very likely to see some crazy Kirkman-like levels of success of artists who are able to support themselves doing their craft. We already see a lot of that with webcomics. This is actually more interesting and intriguing to me, because the independent artist doesn't need to make truckloads of money to be content, but seeing a bunch of people being able to make livings of 30k, 40k, 100k a year that allows them to focus entirely on creating, and not having to have a part time job? I think that's going to be a strong sub-plot of this digital comics boom.

Sometime relatively soon, an unknown comic creator is going to hit big through one of these digital distribution frameworks/systems/apps and will make a mint, thereby making the larger publishes look stupid for not getting it right out of the gate. Have to wait and see how the DC relaunch goes first. The revolution will be downloaded.

comic creators should be doing the same thing. 99cent in .cbr or pdf on amazon or their own website while they wait for the comic apps to get around to approving them.

i remember seeing one of julian lytles first comics in .cbr form on the board, get that up dude.

Amazon's got to LOVE this guy!

He made $350k on 1 million books and they pocket the other $650k.

I'm slowly rolling out my first children's fantasy novel THE SPIRIT OF THE MOON by JOHN BOMAN, via Smashwords (see banner link below!). They are rolling it out for me on various platforms (it is available from APPLE IBOOKS as we speak) and it is only $0.99 as well. The cover was done by forum member Juha Veltti, which I'm extremely happy with.

Next up, it will be launched on Amazon in the next couple of weeks, via Createspace publishing, as a paperback.

It's interesting publishing yourself, definitely an uphill battle as far as marketing goes but well worth the experience.

Hope you guys can check it out and support a forum member!

You know, this has been accomplished before in print as well.  If art is good, it will find an audience.   Thumbs Up

yeah but when he says

Which was naive. Coming from a legacy publishing background, I knew that 35% royalties were much better than anything the Big 6 offered. Even so, when I first got into this, I thought that cheap ebooks would be a loss lead, that would get people to read my more expensive books.

I mentioned it before, but once there is a color kindle, comic companies need to get stuff on that kindle store quickly.
It's better then anyone else is giving.

The royalties are definitely better but remember you have to do all the things a traditional publisher would normally do e.g. promotion, PR, etc. This takes a lot of time and effort (particularly if you have a day job!) which could be better spent actually writing. But like any endeavour, the rewards are worth it if you succeed. These guys seem to be doing something right.

Absolutely. I just think with the push of digital, the way cream rises now will be all that much more democratic. For a book to take off in the DM, a lot of things need to happen before a run of the mill customer can buy a book. Digital seems to have fewer barriers of entry, along with a creator being able to tailor their content to uber-niche markets.

Unfortunatly stories like this are the exception.

It's also a bit like saying to EA or Activision... Check out Angry Birds 250 million downloads at $0.99 whyare you still makeing Modern Warfare III for $60.
