There you go...as I said on Wednesday, if DC was comfortable with DiDio, they would renew his contract and not let him hang in the wind. If they didn't, he would be gone soon.

http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog/2008/06/23/dc-update-didio-not-going-anywhere/

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

He was so happy and friendly at HeroesCon, I couldn't have believed for a moment that his job was in danger.  In fact, I've developed a mancrush on DiDio that rivals the one I have for Mr. David A Price.

Speaking of such, this episode was a David A. Palooza, was it not?!  I was listening to it on the way to North Carolina, and I nearly ended up in a cowpatch two or three times.  David, I said this before, but I'll change it up a tad.

With you, sir, I do duly wish to ROCKK.

But let me not overlook the 3/4s whom I have been growing acquainted to...

VinceB, you always take me by surprise.  Your moderating tones hides a truly wicked wit.  I've never heard Bullpen Bulletins so this is my first series with you.  I like you!

Chris, I actually saw you at the NYCC, I believe.  (Unless you tell me you weren't there.)  You came into Podcast Alley and someone called out the name "Chris!" and you went rushing over to them carrying a moderate-sized case.  There was a kind of hush that descended on the Alley, and I had the sense that a luminary had walked among us.  Again, I had never heard Around Comics, so this here is my first (second if you count NYCC) exposure to you.  I'm beginning to believe what Vince says about you.

Jason, you are the weakest link.  Goodbye!  JOKING!! Evil  What I loved was hearing you revert to caveman as booties were being bandied about.  Do you have a license plate that says "ASSMAN"?  Roll On Floor Laughing  I keep trying to imagine you as a man with corporate cut hair in a shirt and tie, working in an office on the 39th floor with a secretary and a view of the Park ... and a pile of trades on the corner of your desk.  You're reclined with your feet up reading Blankets. Rock Horns

Keep up the goodies!

Or in Pricespeak;  "Zou-OOooFF!!"

1) I am CLEARLY the weakest link, by design. As one of my mentors taught me, always make sure you buy the smallest house in the best neighborhood and not the other way around. Wood = smallest house. 11 O'Clock = best neighborhood.

2) I AM an ass man and love that we can talk freely of ass and bobbies on this forum; because other forums a tad more restrictive on those fronts. ASS makes me CRASS!

3) Your mental picture isn't far off. But being a partner affords me a few liberties. I have a beard (decidedly not corporate) and only wear a suit once or twice a week when meeting with investors or attending a meeting. Most days I'm in business casual; sometimes even jeans with a button down and sports coat. Interestingly, I did used to look out over Central Park but our new digs put me squarely in midtown (I'm on the 9th floor).

4) There's not a day that goes by I don't have some kind of comic at my disposal, although to be honest I'm often too busy to read anything during the trading day. Sad

Thanks for the kind words and thanks for listening!

Concerning the Harvey's, and I apologize if this was already brought up in this thread (I looked. I really did.), part of the unevenness of the publishers represented is that there's a tendency to oversaturate the nominations. Why else does Gemstone have such a strong presence every year on the Harvey's but the same can't be said for other awards. It's not a knock on Gemstone, just the actual nomination process itself which has received criticisms from several industry insiders.

All awards are kookey in one way or another, but I always scratch my head at the Harvey's.

On sales numbers, Vince and Chris: you are my heroes.

I like how in one breath David chastises the DC Nation page and in the next clamors for the return of the Bullpen Bulletins page. Wha huh?

Yes, and my point that I went on to say was that the Bullpen Bulletins page had some useful information.  Back in the day it had a checklist of what was hitting the newsstand, later it was a monthly checklist, and later still it listed what was out that week with a small blurb about each offering.  And it contained ITEM!s and if not all of them were to your liking, generally at least one was informative.

DC Nation's page is a waste with a big ass banner on top, some editor commenting on or covering up something the company is doing in the middle third, and at the bottom we have the cover of the next issue and three covers to other titles out that week.  Do those three issues have anything in common with the issue you just read?  Dunno.

Awhile ago I mentioned that this useless page could be used to further the story or clue readers into other titles they might want to read: Want to know more about Green Arrow's new foe Deathstroke?  Check out the Judas Contract and Identity Crisis! (the last suggestion would actually help people understand why Slade might really want a piece of Ollie (other than the money being right), but what do I know?  I'm only a fan of these characters.)

Sure, some questions were answered that came up during 52 (questions were answered, right?  Like Alan's eyes and Hawkgirl's growth?  Right?) but when it came to Countdown, letting the readers know where they could continue the story (Teen Titans, Amazons Attack, etc.) would have been a better use of that page then reading about DiDio's adventure in trying to jimmy an assistant's desk drawer to see if he had any gum or trace his hand on a desk blotter and make a turkey.

Maybe he could look through some old Meanwhile... columns by Dick Giordano and really learn how to tease the readers.

I buy a comic book, I read everything in it.  I don't stop at the letters or company's propaganda pages.  Dark Horse, Marvel, Image...  How can Vertigo get it right, but DC can't?

Valid points one and all Mr. Price. Perhaps the problem is we've become (as a society) more shallow and narcissistic. Or maybe the current editors of both Marvel and DC assume their readers get that kind of information from the internet. They have used that reasoning time and again to explain the demise of letters pages.

I actually felt that way about the DC Nation page and good points made on that. I think evaD's brought up a good point too that maybe on their part, they see that consumers are getting info from the nets, but here's the thing tho- It can't be assumed that every reader is the "forum/get the info before everyone else does", kind of type. I think the problem with things like this and Cup O' Joe to a degree is more like a corporate pamphlet of "what's going on our end", rather than a tool that could address to what's coming on that book you just purchased. THAT may be where the situation of wasting the editorial page could come from.

Image is starting to get to that trend too. I remember buying Red Mass and usually I'm expecting Hickman's backmatter/afterword, and I see that it's Image's "what's coming up" ad. Those final pages should help product sell, not give us what else is being sold that week/month, etc.
