Marvel Noise Episode 41
« on: 09:07 AM | Wednesday, July 16, 2008 »

The days may be longer, but that doesn't mean the host has more time to do what he wants to do. Oh, woe. However - things are not dim! Adam! Mike! Backwards Dave! Steve! A prenuptial Carlos! Pat!! It's a packed house this week and everybody has something to offer.

From the far out (Bring 'em Back) to the wacky (Mighty Marvel Movie Minute) and a voicemail from a groom moments away from standing at the altar, this episode has something for everyone. Including some reviews of Astonishing X-Men #25, Secret Invasion #4, and Captain America by Ed Brubaker Omnibus.

Other titles mentioned include GeNext, Last Defenders, Punisher, Young X-Men, Captain America, Mighty Avengers, and X-Factor.

Get it here.

Get down, America! Vote Howard the Duck in 2008! That’s right, folks. It’s an election year, and what better way to celebrate than to cast your vote for the one candidate who’ll really tell it like it is. Born on a planet populated by talking waterfowl, Howard the Duck found himself trapped in a world he never made: ours! Howard was the archetypal outsider, able to see through the absurdities of human society in the 1970s with uncanny accuracy and an acerbic wit. His adventures presented writer Steve Gerber with a platform from which to engage in an ongoing critique of contemporary fools and pretenders, from power-mad capitalist wizard Pro-Rata to cult leader Reverend Joon Moon Yuc to the dreaded Doctor Bong! Experience for yourself the complete comic adventures of Howard in this Omnibus collection, reprinting his first appearances and the entire run of his first series. Collecting stories from ADVENTURE INTO FEAR #19, MAN-THING #1, GIANT-SIZE MAN-THING #4-5, HOWARD THE DUCK #1-33, MARVEL TREASURY EDITION #12 and MARVEL TEAM-UP #96.

Add Spider-Man into this mix as the lone voice of sanity, and you've got chocolate and peanut butter with bullets dipped in it. Delicious! Violent! Explodey! Plus: Take a look inside the life and times of two misfits who’ve both been victims of the Punisher. And with WORLD WAR HULK in full swing and New York shut off from the outside world, who's left to protect those left behind? Frank @#$%!@!* Castle, that's who – and he's none too thrilled. Bizarre Adventures

Originally titled ‘Marvel Preview’, running from 1975 to 1981 before changing its name to ‘Bizarre Adventures’,

Marvel Preview spotlighted a variety of different characters and genres such as Thor, Sherlock Holmes, Kull, Blade the Vampire Hunter, Moon Knight, Star-Lord, Paradox, and UFO, Horror and Detective anthologies.

#20 & 23 were anthologies entitled ‘Bizarre Adventures’ and ‘Bizarre Adventures 2’ with stories by title editor Lynn Graeme, Denny ONeil, Steve Skeates, Roger Stern and Mike W Barr, and art teams such as John Buscema/Joe Jusko, Gene Colan/Alfredo Alcala, Frank Miller, and Steve Bissette.

By issue 25, the title changed its name to ‘Bizarre Adventures’, running for 10 issues from 1981 to 1982 before being cancelled with issue #34

Edited by Lynn Graeme, then Denny ONeil

#25 ‘Lethal Ladies’ contained a Black Widow story by Ralph Macchio with art by Paul Gulacy, also featured a Chris Claremont/Michael Golden ‘Lady Daemon’ story, and a ‘Daughters of the Dragon’ story by Claremont, Marshall Rogers, and Bob Mcleod.

#26 ‘King Kull’ by Doug Moench & John Bolton

#27 ‘Secret Lives of the XMen’ with a Paul Gulacy cover, a ‘Jean Grey/Phoenix’ story by Claremont, John Buscema and Klaus Janson, ‘Iceman’ by Duffy, George Perez & Alfredo Alcala, & Nightcrawler, written by Duffy & Bob Layton with art by Dave Cockrum/Ricardo Villamonte.

#28 ‘Unlikely Heroes’, with a Bob Larkin cover and ‘Elektra’ by Frank Miller, ‘Shadow Hunter’ with Neal Adams/Larry Hama art, ‘Huntsman’ (Archie Goodwin, Micheal Golden and Steve Mitchell), and the Inhumans’ ‘Triton’ by Mary Jo Duffy with art by Wendy Pini

#29 a Horror issue featuring Stephen King’s ‘Lawnmower Man’ with art by Walt Simonson, Greenburg the Vampire drawn by Steve Leialoha, and a tale of pre-teen murder by Bruce Jones & John Buscema.

#30 flashbacked to a Marvel Preview character with ‘Paradox’

#31 ‘A hard look at violence’ with a Joe Jusko cover, and tales by Denny ONeil & Frank Miller, Larry Hama, Mark Gruenwald & Sienkiewicz, John Byrne, Tom Defalco & Herb Trimpe, Steve Bissette & Steve Perry

#32 ‘Thor and the Gods’ (an issue I don’t have so can't comment on - what, you thought I was looking this stuff up on Wikipedia?)

#33 ‘Fright’, with a Moench/Dave Simons Simon Garth Zombie story, ‘Slayride’, by Bruce Jones and Bob Hall, and a ‘Tomb of Dracula’ story by Steve Perry & Steve Bissette

The final issue of this series at the end of 1982 was #34, a special ‘Hate the Holidays Issue!”. This last issue was comic book sized, and ran in full bloody color: a Joe Jusko cover, ‘Son of Santa’ by Gruenwald and Alan Kupperberg, 'Howard the Duck' by Steven Grant and Paul Smith, 'Dr Death' by Hama and Bob Camp, 'Slaybells' with story and art by Mike Carlin, and 'Santa Bites the Big Apple' by Al Milgrom.

....A pretty good run with pretty fantastic creators...  check 'em out if you can find 'em! Smiley

My pleasure, Jacob!  The B&W marvel mags really would translate well into Essentials format.  Let's hope the recent 'Rampaging Hulk' volume was just the tip of the iceberg.

Marvel Preview #11 with Star-Lord by Claremont, Byrne and Austin is still one of the fondest memories I've ever had of buying and enjoying comics as a kid (the same day, I also bought DC Special #29 featuring the origin of the Justice Society by Levitz, Staton and Layton-- the day was friggin' magic...)

There was also an issue of Preview that featured the second book of Gil Kane's Blackmark...

Lethal Ladies and Secret Lives of The X-Men were absolutely terrific...

An interesting note about the Huntsman story in #28's Unlikely Heroes, other than the fact that it was realearly Michael Golden artwork, it was also a re-worked Logan's Run story...

Man, I miss those Marvel Magazines... and that includes Epic Illustrated as well, a book that never should've left us...

These stories were reprinted in the early '80's in full color in a comic-sized 'Star-Lord Special Edition'... that was my first exposure to the character - that's some good comics! Smiley
