Sites for buying original art
« on: 01:11 PM | Monday, November 08, 2010 »

Lots of original art chatter going on lately  Heartswhich makes me all sorts of giddy.

That had me thinking it might be helpful to start a thread where we can share sites to buy said original art. This is a very disparate industry where even the primary dealers usually only handle a handful of artists. I know I'm ALWAYS looking for new places to check out, and there are probably a ton more I haven't yet discovered. Between us, we can probably get together a nice collection that I can maintain on the first post in a list form.  Rock Horns

  • Albert Moy -- One of the longest running OA vendors, he's got a collection that ranges into the very high end stuff
  • Anthony's Collectibles -- Another one of the legends, Anthony Snyder, who sells boatloads of OA ranging in price from cheap to uber expensive
  • Art & Comics Original -- Pretty sure he's mainly a re-seller, but some interesting pages including a lot of European and Latin American artists
  • The Art of Comics -- Another primary rep for show faves the likes of Mahmud Asrar, Bryan Hitch, Khoi Pham and Yildiray Cinar
  • The Beguiling -- Amazing rep specializing in indie and small press creators. Includes Ba/Moon, Becky Cloonan, Paul Pope, Jason, Jeff Lemire and many more!
  • The Artists Choice -- Spencer Beck's site featuring a massive collection of repped artists including Coipel, McNiven, Romita Jr, Epting, Cheung
  • Big Wow Art -- Another great selection of pages. It appears he's a rep for a few artists exclusively but most of his stock is secondary.
  • Black Line Fever -- An admittedly annoying old school HTML website design, but if you can get past that he has some amazing pieces for sale/trade including some legendary indie/underground stuff
  • Cadence Comic Art -- A personal show fave that reps the likes of Mike Norton, Skottie Young, Gabriel Hardman, Ryan Stegman and Sean Murphy
  • Comic Art Collective -- A hub for finding original art from many alternative comic creators, takes you directly to their creator sites
  • Comic Art House -- Site with collection of artists including some (like Andy Tong and Chris Moreno) that I haven't seen featured at other spots
  • Comic Art Ink -- Barrows, Benjamin, Boschi, Tocchini, Guara
  • ComicArtShop -- A hub that does a nice job of highlighting OA art available for sale at places like eBay and Heritage and via classifieds
  • Comic Book Pros (Alex Ross Art) -- Uncle Sal's site where he sells Alex Ross' art exclusively as well as reps Bill Sienkiewicz, Angel Medina, Texeira and Ernie Chan
  • Comic Con Art -- Exclusive rep for Ed Benes and a host of other artists including Andre Pepoy and Tony Akins
  • Distinctive Original Art -- Another old school website that could use some updating, but he has great pages for sale from the likes of Byrne, Alan Davis, Pacheco, Ploog, Rude, Grell and others
  • Essential Sequential -- Home of Eric Canete, Mark Chiarello, Matteo Scelera, Dave Johnson, Stephane Roux and others
  • Fanfare Sports & Entertainment -- Michigan based store that sells all kinds of merchandise, but has a HUGE collection of secondary original art for sale too, including Stuart Immonen
  • Fog City Art Exchange -- Very small site but noteworthy in that it appears to be the rep for Art Adams
  • Got Super Powers? -- Mike Allred and other goodness
  • Graphic Collectibles -- I've never used this site but they have a ton of different pages from lots of artists and the prices vary from very affordable to super high end
  • KwanChang.com -- Another site I just recently discovered. He is the exclusive rep for Clayton Henry and Leinil Yu, but has lots of secondary pages for sale on top of that
  • LA Gallery Montreal -- Original art dealer for many of Canada's leading comic book artists, including Tom Fowler and Yanick Paquette
  • McConnell Art -- Relatively new OA dealer in Canada focused on a number of local indie creators like James Stokoe and Brandon Graham. Also happens to be the host of the InkStuds podcast.
  • The Mighty Nib -- Not as active in their promotion and harder to find, but I came across them when Paul Pelletier told me he was repped by them. Also reps Stelfreeze, Jeanty, Hamner and others
  • Red Sector Art -- Just discovered this site when looking for Eduardo Risso art. He reps Risso and a handful of other European artists
  • Romitaman Original Art -- Claims to be the largest original art dealer in the world, and certainly it's hard to argue against it. Has a MASSIVE collection of secondary art from some of the very best to ever work in the business. Deals in pricier stuff so few "bargains" here
  • Serendipity Art Sales -- Broad collection of art including some artist alley faves
  • SplashPageArt -- Reps a boatload of artists including Adlard, Ottley, Cliff Chiang and Jock

Question for you guys experience with theartistschoice.com:  How long does it normally take for Spencer to reply to order requests?  It's only been a couple of days, but I want the damn art so bad.

Thanks,
Jim

it's weird that it's gotten to this point, but i don't really feel comfortable mailing a check/money order to buy something anymore.  i was very very close to buying an eaglesham page from that site, but i just can't bring myself to trust it.

I've posted this in the Grail thread.  It's the only one that I own that wasn't done specifically for me.  Walt does "quickie" sketches when he goes to shows.  This one is a little more elaborate and originally personalized "To Steve...back in 83" (I would've been twelve when he did this).  Walt is my all time favorite and a huge influence on my own art.  I couldn't pass it up.

I ordered 3 Jim Aparo pages from theartistschoice.com and it was a painfully long process.  I think it may have been a month (at least 3 weeks) before I got confirmation that the pages were available.  I would have ditched on the whole process if I was not getting such a killer deal.  They really need to update their process.  I doubt I would order from them again due to the ineffciancy of their process.  That said, the art was exactly as described and the price was unbeatable.

i had the same type of experience as bean, from inquiry to OA on my doorstep took almost 4 months (he "never received" my original inquiry). Serious, serious pain in the ass, but also like bean said the art is exactly as described and the price was best in show.

So i would say if you got time to burn & don't really care when the OA arrives, you really can't beat the price.

I plan on buying a page or two from Artist choice in the next month, but I dread the long process I've heard others have. Some of these art sites need to get with the times with site design. Get an account on square space and build a decent site.  Getting my Orc Stain cover has been an adventure also. I know others had a  long wait as well, but I'm hoping it wasn't shipped Canada Post, and is sitting in some post office somewhere.

So far I have 6 Comic Pages framed.
2 Walking Dead pages
1 Detective Comics page by Jock from the latest run (Love this page)
1 JL:Generation Lost page by Loprestti and Ryan
2 Hack/Slash Pages  by Emily Stone

I have the Orc Stain Cover from Issue 6 on the way, and I will have an Athena Voltaire page eventually as well.

Thanks for the info guys.  So far all I have done is place the request so I'm not out any money yet.  Ive been waiting for some Ivan Reis pages to show up that were pencils only.  I really hope I get my requests!

Yea but Ive seen the pictures of your sketch corner and it blows most out of the water. Your Wachter pieces and the Thing collection are a sight to behold.

However, we're throwing a big work party this weekend at the house and everyone seems excited to see the legendary comic collection/art that I'm know for at work. So I picked up a few of those cheap frames from Michaels today to quick frame the rest of my OA and get it on the wall.

Like others have said, it can be painfully long. The longest was during the Christmas sale which I think was about four months and the shortest was about six weeks.

Spencer is one of the few I will still send a check to. His web site and business methods may be dated but hes honest.

Even though its not personal that is a gem. Especially reading the new Omnibus I would pay some coin to own a page from his run, no doubt.

I've had similar experiences with co-workers and original art.  I hang most of my stuff in my office.  I wish I could claim to be flying my flag, but it's largely because I don't have to bother with getting spousal approval to hang stuff in my office.

What's odd/weird is that everyone who visits my office treats art collecting as a 100% respectable hobby....perhaps a little offbeat, but completely respectable.  [Interestingly, custom bound hardcovers of comics are given similar respect whereas OGNs or hardcovers of collected editions from the publishers are NOT.  Odd.

Those two hobbies of mine are "cool", but what is really interesting is the way it has changed the perception of comic reading in general.  Before I started hanging art in my office and folks saw comics laying on my desk (usually b/c it is Wednesday), it was kinda like they found me reading Penthouse or something.  Now that I have art hanging up, it is kinda like the geeky and deviant hobby of comic reading can kinda hide under the halo of respectability of original art collecting.

Just an interesting observation I've made.  Somehow being interested in comic stories is geeky/weird/deviant/strange but being interested in the art is acceptable and sophisticated.
