Rise of the Apes

Now this is appropriate subject matter for The Monkey Room! Some of you may know this but I just learned that FOX is producing a prequel to Planet of the Apes called Rise of the Apes. It will be released next Thanksgiving.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514/
An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.
This sounds like a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes but after a little reading, I get the impression it will be pretty different.
This will be the first Apes film with all-CGI apes instead of actors in ape makeup.
As a huge fan of the original Apes movies and someone who detested Burton's remake, I have mixed feelings about this. Thoughts?

I'm not the biggest Apes fan out there, but this could be neat. The only thing that worries me is it already has a release date.

Are you thinking it may be rushed? I just heard about it today but apparently, it's been in the works for a while. The release date has now been set for next Thanksgiving so that may not be a concern. I just hope it's good.

Planet of the Apes was all about actors in costume. I know I've seen some pretty good CGI apes in film, but nothing as cool as those ape costumes. Everything else aside, the apes looked pretty cool in Burton's remake. This smells of a money saving shortcut to me.

Ok, cool. Yeah, when I hear about something for the first time, and it has a release date, it makes me think it might be a rush-job. But maybe I just haven't heard about this, and they've done a lot of work already.

Maybe... although I also think there may be a mentality in Hollywood these days that they can do anything better with CGI and a belief that the viewing public prefers CGI over makeup effects.
They'll probably throw some 3-D in the mix as well, just as a way to charge more.

I'm not the biggest Apes fan either, and CGI monkeys turns me off. I'll make a better guess when I see a trailer though.

The Planet of the Apes was never 'my' thing, but I do appreciate the geek cred it seems to hold. I'll definitely check out the remake; can't be worse than the Burton/Marky Mark joint, right?

i LOVE the apes movies (the boxed set was one of my very first dvd purchases, my gabe hardman sketch is of caeser from "conquest"), and i was very very worried about this movie when i first heard about it. however, after seeing the trailer i am really interested, i think it looks great. it "changes" a bit of what i always assumed was the prehistory of the apes universe, but that stuff is never really spelled out in the originals, so it's more that it's actually establishing it rather than changing it. that aside, this looks really promising to me.

When you put them together POTA is one of the most cohesive set of movies that interact with each other like a beautiful puzzle. Being as we live in a era where the sequel to make money is so often done and the original intent is was never to make a franchise. POTA stands out as movies that grew from one to the next to make a harmonious series.
I don't mind the prequel as long as it doesn't shit all over the original materiel.

i have a feeling that somewhere more toward the end, or as a teaser at the end of the credits , like most movies are doing , I hope they keep this out of the 3D area .... I'm a fan of the older movies I have hopes for this

It sure looks like it will change what was established in the 4th movie, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. I think this film is more of a reboot than a prequel.
I'm a POTA fan so I doubt I'll be able to resist going to see this but Ii didn't find that trailer encouraging at all.

I suppose it just depends on how they want to tell the story. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, which this film seems to be based on, was followed by Battle for the Planet of the Apes, which was set about 10 years in the future (although there was a framing sequence set quite a bit further in the future, perhaps 40-50 years).
Whatever they do, I imagine they'll skip forward in time.

the whole premise of this one seems to be that they've developed this drug that can "repair the brain," and as a result it seems to make the apes crazy intelligent in a very short amount of time, so using this as a foundation, they could feasibly "evolve" rather quickly.

Never dug the Planet of the Apes movies and even went to see Marky Mark's movie and it wasn't good except for the great job on the ape suits. This looks like it will be cool so I will go see it.

I think this looks good, and am excited to watch it. The first two Apes movies are classics, but after that, they got very stale very quickly, so it wouldn't bother me if that part of the history was reworked a bit.

i actually think 2 and 5 are the only real missteps in the series. i liked 3 a lot though it was very different in tone and content. my order of favorites is 4, 1, 3, 2, 5.
