Comic Book Swap
« on: Today at 12:02 AM »

My friend and I were batting around this idea for mid-summer sometime and I wanted to see if this was ever attempted.

The concept is like a book swap but with comics.  People bring old comics they don't want and trade for stuff they do.  I've seen it done with books and it's successful.  However, with comics having "value", I don't know if it would.  However, because a lot of comics nowadays are either trades or not really worth a lot on the resale market, this might have a shot.

This would be in Chicago and I know we have a good stack of Chicago members so your opinions on if you would participate would be welcome.

I know from listening to the late Just Bill's podcast (he's not dead, just...resting) that they've done this kind of thing successfully at the CGS SuperShow.

They do this monthly in Los Angeles at a thing called "Comic Book Sunday".  Folks like Jim Krueger & other industry folks participate, but it's open to anyone!   I found out about it from Daniel Corey (writer of Image's Moriarty) when I was interviewing him a few months back and have gone.  It's fun!

I do this online using SwapTree.com. They connect their users for trades of DVD's and books, including graphic novels and trade paperbacks. Using it I managed to get Matt Kindt's Revolver and Jeff Lemire's The Nobody still in shrink wrap. For those that don't have a local trading resource, I would highly recommend it.

I already use paperbackswap and swapacd. I've managed to acquire a few trades through paperbackswap but have unloaded considerably more that way. I'll have to check out swaptree.com. ThanK you for mentioning it!

You're welcome. I've found it to be a decent resource for trades and hard covers since it's so easy to filter down to their "Comics and Graphic Novels" section and peruse what's available to me based on what I'm offering to trade. Here's the stuff I've gotten via trades on the site...

13 Essentials and Showcases
2 Vertigo Crime hard covers (Filthy Rich and The Executor)
Batman: Ego and other Tales hard cover
Demo
Hawaiian Dick
I Kill Giants
Superman: Kryptonite No More hard cover
and the aforementioned Nobody and Revolver hard covers still in shrink wrap

i've done it with friends before, but just one on one.  i've thought about doing it at the monthly comic book talk my friends and i have but it would really take full cooperation, otherwise you just end up with one person giving away all their books, which is fine, but not if they were expecting to get new stuff in exchange.
