Comic Book Noise 242
« on: 02:05 PM | Sunday, May 15, 2011 »

Enjoyed the trip down memory lane with the Micronauts talk, especially in the culture around obtaining Micronauts....that series existed both in the height of my newsstand comic buying days and my initial forays into direct market comic shops.

Yeah, Danny Bulanadi was a really heavy handed inker at that time (early in his career), similar somewhat to a Rudy Nebres-type style....I don't think he ever pencilled, just inked (at least at Marvel).  He lightened up significantly later (in the '90s) and did a pretty decent job over Paul Ryan on Fantastic Four when DeFalco was writing.

As for covering up Ditko, at this time in the 80's, when Ditko came back to Marvel with the Captain Universe Marvel Spotlight stuff, the Micronauts, Avengers Annual and eventually a steady gig on Rom, it appears that he was turning in very loose breakdowns, with figures not carrying much weight, etc...although Bulanadi was indeed covering up everyone, not just Ditko, the Ditko pencilled books from that time seemed to be inked one of two ways: either very true to Ditko's lines (the Marvel Spotlight stuff, the Micronauts Annuals, and some Rom with P Craig Russel inks) or heavily, like Bulanadi did, Byrne did on the Avengers Annual, and Russell did at times on Rom.

I enjoyed the episode! Thumbs Up

Thanks Steve.

I don't really remember a lot of Ditko's stuff around that time. I was a bit surprised to see him on the title, but if he was half assing it, then it is completely understandable for Bulanadi (whose name I butchered almost every time I said it) to have to take over.
