Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (spoilers)
« on: 10:06 PM | Saturday, June 18, 2011 »

Has anybody else watched this yet?  I wasn't sure what to expect, I wasn't a huge fan of Batman: Gotham Knights.  It was too discombobulated between the stories and the art ranged from decent to 'oh my god, my eyes!'  Okay, I exaggerate to make my point.

Emerald Knights doesn't seem to me to suffer from that.  While the art does still vary, it's mostly consistent.  It also benefits greatly from the fact that, unlike Gotham Knights, all of the individual stories are woven into one larger, over-arching story.

Most of the voice acting is good, but I'm a fan of Nathan Fillion from his Firefly days, so I could be biased.  I could hear a lot of Captain Reynolds, or Richard Castle (from his current series), in his delivery.  There were a number of other voices I recognized, but couldn't put a name to.  Now I'm wishing I would have watched the credits..  Tongue

Okay, that's about it for the spoiler-free portion.  Stop reading here if you don't want to be spoiled.

Most of the stories take place in form of flashbacks.  Hal (Fillion) is training a new recruit (Arisia) while the Corp is dealing with a universal level threat (the over-arching story).  You get to see the usual characters like Kilowog and Mogo, both of whom have their own flashbacks, but you also get little cameos like Ch'p.

My favourite stories are the ones about Kilowog as a new recruit (Tomar Re was in his training squad, too) and Mogo.

I typically rate things on a scale of "Buy it, Borrow it, or Burn it".  This is a very strong 'Borrow'.  The only thing keeping it from being a 'Buy' is that a lot of the appeal for me was inside references.  If you're not already familiar with the GLC, you might be better off renting it.

Cool. Thanks for the review, Wei.

I haven't looked at the spoiler section yet because I plan on getting it from Netflix as soon as I can.
