NEXUS #8

So I just read this and it is one of the best things I've ever read. Seriously. I loved the story beats in this issue and the art was (as it had been for the previous 7 issues and mini-series) fantastic. I've fallen hard for the Nexus series.

This story arc served as my introduction to the character of the Badger. I really enjoyed him. He strikes me as Deadpool before there was a Deadpool. I think that I might have to track down Badger backissues as well as finishing out the Nexus series.

Goddamn I love comics!

Yeah, Nexus will do that to you. It was a great series.

Man, how cool is that one-eyed ray thing on the cover?! Smiley

Out of a 5 star rating.

Jonah Hex Six Gun War tpb is a good western tale that is action packed to the bitter end (4 stars).

Enjoy the ride.  Mage:THD is my favorite series but Nexus is a very close 2nd.  The issues without The Dude on art are hit or miss for me.

Those issues with The Badger are pure gold.  I'm happy we have another Nexus fan on he boards.

I think I know, but would that be the first or second Mage series?

I realized that they are both THD right after I posted this.

I was refering to the 1st series.  The art, humor and world of magic just sucked me in and I have never forgotten the joy of discovering Matt Wagner's art for the first time.  Also, it doesn't hurt at we share a birthday.  He gets a free 1 up for that alone. Tongue

There are so many comics from this era that top my all time favorites list (Mage, American Flagg, Nexus, Love and Rockets, etc.).  It was truly a wonderful time to be a comic fan especially if you had access to a well stocked comic shop that supported the indies.

If you dig on Charles Burns' stuff with X'ed Out and Black Hole go grab King of the Flies (Fantagraphics) by Mezzo and Pirus! Great stuff.

All this Mage talk has me wanting to grab my Hero Discovered off of the shelf and read it. Has Image done an HC for the Hero Defined in the vein of the one they did for Discovered?

Word up! I love this book. And this trade is especially cool because it actually shows you how to make chits from a gronch. In today's economy, it can't hurt to know stuff like that.

Heavy Metal Spring 2011 (Living Dead Edition)

A mixed bag, to be sure, but definitely a few good 'uns toward the bottom. The last, long-ish story was really well done. I kinda saw the ending coming, but it didn't dampen the impact of the last page.

I'm brand new to the mag... yeah, I liked all the stories pretty well, didn't love any of them. No bad art, no stunning art (IMO), although I did dig Cardoselli's stuff in "Spaghetti Gunsmoke" quite a bit.

The second story had a lot of potential, but just seemed to, I dunno... trail off at the end? Do you know if that's being continued in another issue, or is that the whole thing?

The last story started as my least favorite (Jesus, another zombie apocalypse?) and ended as my favorite (holy God damn that's a rough ending!). I agree that even when you see it coming, it's no less of a gut punch.

Even though nothing blew me away, the overall package did, and I'm definitely on board. I'm going to try to get my hands on some back issues from their website soon, too, I think...

This issue didn't really represent the magazine's typical level of art/design. I thought some of it was actually kinda weak (especially the image used for the cover), which is a feeling I rarely get from Heavy Metal.

I agree. It does seem to be the first of a series. Eastman should have at least included a "The end?" or something. I even flipped past the ads and checked the other half of the mag (sometimes they break longer stories up) thinking there was more to the story. I chuckled to myself because that last page would definitely have driven King DAP nuts.  Roll On Floor Laughing

The White Llama

This was a very good book, the art was beautiful, a real change of pace from the typical superhero books.  Jodorwrosky really has quite a reach in regards to what he can write about.  The more I read his stuff the more I like what he has done and is doing.

Definitely agree on the cover...  looking at some of the past issue covers in the mag only heightened that feeling about the latest cover. Well-rendered, sure, but very white bread... (not to mention being a complete misrepresentation of the issue's contents, but that's most comics anymore I guess).

Maybe that second story will be continued in another one of these specials, but I dunno... the main gist of it was wrapped up, there were just some weird "and then THIS!" things going on at the end that weren't necessary. Oh well.

Glad to know the art is usually better... again, nothing outright bad, but I was expecting to be a bit more WOWed based on the mag's rep.

I finished the Criminal Deluxe yesterday.

What an amazing story, I loved the way the characters all kept showing back up through out the story. This is Bru doing what he does best. Also, the extras in this books are almost worth the cover price all of the extra art is gorgeous as well did anybody see the trailer they put in there for the first six issues ? It really read like a movie trailer I thought it was such a genius idea and something I had never seen before I loved it.

I started FELL last night, cant wait to get home tonight and dive back in because I am a Warren Ellis follower and every time I read something by him I always wonder what took me so long to get around to it.
