After The Walking Dead #78 final pages, I thought Rick is like "I dont want this, I dont want this!" & the leader of the community, Douglas basically says tag your it, you are my successor. I sense more "crazy" Rick is coming.

Just read the 13th trade. What did y'all think?
I thought it was slow as molasses. Really not much suspense this time around, mainly because the moving parts felt like we've been there, done that before:
*** Rick losing his shit
*** Michonne bedding down a guy and closing off emotionally
*** Flirtation by folks due to there being no alternatives
*** The fear that someone (in this case Glenn) might not make it back
*** Being in a city and needing to fend off a swarm
*** Conflict between the "original" crew and newbies
I did, however, like the way they dispatched that gang with impunity. I was fearful it would turn into another Governor/Prison situation but this time they handled their business top to bottom.

i think unfortunately, due to the nature of the series, there are going to be certain themes that get revisited and redone. pretty much what you listed wood. i actually talked about his with my wife, how walking dead is unique because you KNOW whatever happens it's NOT going to work out. no matter how safe a place seems, no matter how trusting some people seem, shit is going to hit the fan at some point. because if it doesn't, there's no point in the series anymore. but regardless of superficially knowing what's gonna happen, it's still a blast to read.

Just read the 13th trade. What did y'all think?
I only started reading the series this spring after picking up the Compendium at C2E2 for cheap but I think Kirkman may have lost me with this last trade. I finished it last night and the damn thing has turned into a soap opera but, instead of doctors and lawyers, it has zombies.
I kind of liked how Kirkman quickly eliminated the threat to the community. For a bit, I thought he was going to begin treading familiar ground with the outside threat but they were quickly dealt with. But it's all of the personal bullshit that really just got to be too much in this volume. This soap opera element has always been there in the book so I don't know why it's bugging me so much this time.

I don't see how tension and characters can be built without the "slow soap-opera" bits. They are a fundamental part of the ebb and flow of the title. I don't find them slow, repetitive or dull because I know they are just the prelude to another "rug-pulled from under the feet" moment.
And again Kirkman showed that he can turn the tables. The threat from the outsiders was dealt with in a wholly unexpected way. The twist now seems to be that as far as bands of survivors go, our people may be the top dogs.
I love it!

This last issue had some interesting moments mixed in with the zombie herd that is descending on the community.
The realization that Rick and his clan may just be the last sane(ish) people left on the outside is setting in. Getting to the point that this new civilization is moving past the recruitment phase.
Andrea continues to grow and show just how damn strong she is.
I think the group of folks that were clearing out the roamers outside the gates might be fucked. They're gonna lose a few folks trying to get back inside.

Since I read the book in singles (although sometimes they pile up) sometimes I need to refresh on who is who. That is why I keep this page bookmarked... I suggest you all take a look and go "oh, I remember that guy" and "Aww shit, I hated it when that person was killed!"

For me she is the secret "main character" of the series.. kick ass in a "I cant believe I just happen to be good at this" way and mostly good natured and supportive to the other survivors. Before her I think Tyresse was one of my favorites, but that did not work out too well.

I love this series and if you are current you know we have had it calm and shit is about to hit the fan. I am still not sure how but I think the bodycount will be high. oh, and thanks Tom. You have shown me that nothing is flawless. I too now hate the way the phone was used.

Anybody a big fan of Walking Dead and want the "Amazing Arizona Comic-Con Variant" of issue #80? They gave them out at the con and I read Walking Dead in hardcover so I don't need the issue. First one who pm's me can have it free of charge.

I (first time reading WD) have been working my way thru the Walking Dead Compendium Vol 1. I spent a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon in the park reading 25+ issues
pretty much all of the stuff at the prison through meeting the Govenor, being tortured by the Govenor, and returning to the prison. I stopped where Rick expects that the folks from Woodbury will come looking for the prison, end of Chapter 6
I think I need to lay down now and curl up in a ball.....
