My there are a few overclocked processors in this thread.  Roll On Floor Laughing

C'mon, guys... He's a KID. Kids repeat stuff. He's also gifted, a fact which probably contributes to his odd behavior.

I believe the issue is being a little overthunk.  Yes
Yep. He's a kid and as Dave points out, kids can be annoying sometimes. However, I've spent my whole professional life working with kids of all ages and ability levels, I've got three of my own, and I rarely have to deal with a kid that repeats that kind of information. The ones that do are usually stuck on themselves. I'm not saying you can't like the book, I'm saying it was a turn off for me.

Kids are a lot like adults in this area. Once they get to school age and begin to socialize, they quickly learn that repeatedly stating how great they are loses them friends.

I believe the intent of this conversation was to discuss first impressions of the book, why can't some of us be turned off by the main character? You guys liked it, great. Some didn't and some are on the fence.
I do agree that Wood is awesome, but I've been listening to him talk for too long to believe the genius part. Evil

this is a valid point, but i don't think this kid has a traditional school based upbringing.  his best friend is a tyranosaurus rex that he built robotic arms for.

I'm not sure his upbringing is all that relevant in a conversation about a gut level reaction to what her you like someone or not. He's a fictional character written with intent. I'm saying Kirkman is deliberately making the kid a little pompous or he has a skewed idea of how kids behave. I'm willing to assume it's on purpose and keep reading. I think and hope that his intent is to create a character who although good at heart, needs to be taken down a peg or two. Why are you so intent on defending the kid's behavior? It seems to me that if you are right, we can expect more of the same in the next issue, this story will get old quick and the character will remain pretty flat. If I'm right we're going to see character development.

i agree that kirkman is making the kid a little pompous intentionally, you pointed out a reason why he wouldn't act that way, i pointed out a reason why i didn't think it was entirely relevant in the conversation.  i was just expressing that i didn't see it as negatively as you did because i saw the intention, you were expressing that you saw it as negatively even though you did see the intention.  just different points of view, no reason to get excited.

I'm not excited. Just conversing. I completely agree with you on almost every point. I think where we diverge is that I need it to be heading somewhere that deals with that behavior trait or I'll lose interest.

I'll probably wait for the trade, but I will checkout the FCBD issue.

Is the FCBD issue just a reprint of the 1st issue? or is it it's own one shot? I was unsure if I was going to get the second issue, until i saw Super Dinosaur sitting on a couch playing video games, that made me want to know more about that character.

I loved the first issue.

It was funny, and the kid is supposed to be slightly annoying. Perhaps bravado covering up what is obviously a difficult situation with his father?

I finally got around to reading the first issue and the FCBD issue, and I really enjoyed them.  Maybe I was in a particularly good mood.  Kirkman threw in Transformers, Maxium Dinobots, and Invincible "First-Class" in a blender, and served me up a delish smoothie.

Howard's art style is definitely changed slightly from his previous work, but the new style is very good and suits the book very well.

And as a first issue, I feel that I have a good handle on who all of the characters are, which is fairly impressive.  And by my count, that's something like 10 characters - Derek, SD, Dr. Dynamo, Maximus, Tricerachops!, the new Technician's family of 4, and the Skateboard robot.

Do the people that like this think it's worth a shot for someone who has  yet to ever enjoy any of Kirkman's work? Is it that cool of a concept and/or departure?

The FCBD is definitely worth picking up as a freebie.  But if you don't even like his Invincible, the odds are probably against us here.

If FCBD delivered that would be sweet for sure  Rock Horns

Thanks for the info though, sounds like a pass for now with a possible HC purchase if I see anything from it later that attracts.

I think it's worth trying because it's different from Kirkman's other work.   As a for instance, I LOVE Invincible & Brit (& Walking Dead, but that's another beast).   I don't particularly care for Super Dinosaur.  You might flip the exact opposite on this & like SD even though you don't like the others.

I just read the FCBD issue this morning and was completely unimpressed. I'm glad so many folks seem to be digging it, though. Rock Horns

I didn't mean to imply that I thought it was a poor quality comic, just that it was not for me.   I thought SD was a GREAT book for kids.  If I had a 10 year old, I'd buy this for him/her in a minute.  I think there are plenty of adults who can get something out of the book (obviously there are based on the number of adults on this thread loving it), but the comic just didn't do anything for me personally.

I didn't get that from what you said, at all. I agree with you that it was well-produced, the premise and execution just did not appeal to me at all. I have no interest in exploring these characters or their world any further. It's like they say, "It's not you; it's me" Whaaaat

 Cheesy

I read this to my 4 year old, and he loved it.  Probably the first comic book he really enjoyed throughout the whole reading experience.  He likes Tiny Titans, but I think he wants more action.

He loved Super Dinosaur, and told me that he "likes it when he runs fast" and "like his guns".

I'm a very happy customer at the moment.

This book didn't really grab my interests but I am 100% sure I would have loved it when I was younger. I reeeally hope this is able to find an audience with the younger crowds!! Anyone download comixology's "Comics for Kids" ap?? Kirkman's a huge advocate for digital so I wonder if this book is available on that ap?

The comics industry desperately needs more all ages titles like this so I hope lots of younger ones have access to it!
