Bought & Thought: 5.14.08

Wolverine: The Amazing Immortal Man and Other Bloody Tales: Three dark stories about the lives of some people that Logan touches in some way.  David Lapham has a good handle on the character.

Wolverine #65: The conclusion of "Get Mystique" felt a little 'off' to me.  The backstory about Logan and Raven was fantastic.  I'm just not sure how I feel about the ending of the issue.

Punisher #57: Moved this story along.  Last page has me anxiously waiting for the next issue.

newuniversal: Shockfront #1: Sums up the first newuniversal arc nicely in the first three pages.  Art is similar to what Larroca was doing, but not as offensive as some found it.

X-Men: Legacy #211: Really good issue.  Charles still trying to fill the gaps, the Hellfire Club, and
Gambit!
Eaton's art is nicely embellished by three inkers (normally, more inkers means less consistency) and Brandon Peterson's flashback pages mesh nicely into the main story.

Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four #1: Not sure.  Seeing
Lyja
was nice, but leading up to that...  I don't know.

Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #2: Still fun stuff.  Michelinie writes a real good Doom and Lim and Layton do a great job rendering the character.  Me like.

The Last Defenders #3: JUNTA!!!!!

Captain Britain and MI: 13 #1: This shows you that the Invasion is not limited to the US.  I smiled as things were said that were still fresh in my brain thanks to a recent Marvel Tales segment.  Oh, yeah, and Black Knight!!!!

The Twelve #5: Now it's just getting depressing.  Feels like something Rick Veitch would write.

GeNext #1: I didn't read the main story yet, but the X-Men: First Class backup by Jeff Parker, Nick Dragotta, and Mike Allred was the bees knees, man.  Like, way cool.

The Black Knight appearance was definitely cool.
The FF Secret Invasion issue had a couple of nice surprises, and fill in a few gaps in the main story, but I'm not sure they were gaps that needed filling.

That X-Men: First Class backup in GeNext #1 was originally published during the first volume of the series.  It can also be found in the X-Men: First Class Mutant Mayhem collection.

I picked up Pretty Baby Machine #1 this past Wednesday (although it came out a week or so before).   For those of you not familiar with the title, it's a take on the 1930s Chicago mob genre.  Notorious gangsters Pretty Boy Floyd, Babyface Nelson and Machine Gun Kelly vs. Big Al Capone is what it boils down to.  Written by Clark Westerman, Art by Kody Chamberlain.

Westerman and Chamberlain paint a nice portrait of gangland-era Chicago but this book fell a little short of the mark for me.  Issue one sets up the plot mostly.  All the characters are pretty dispicable so there's no one to root for unfortunately but the story is enough to hold my attention for now.  I don't know if I'll feel the same way 3 or 4 issues down the road however.

The black & white artwork by Chamberlain is beautiful to look at.   He's really done his research on this era but he's gone a little too heavy on the shadows which makes it difficult to understand the action at times.  I often had trouble knowing what character was in the scene I was reading.

I'm definitely a fan of the crime genre and I'm hopeful this series will pick up with the next issue or two.  The talent is there.  Let's see if it can be harnessed properly.

Where did I also just hear about this?

Oh, yeah (/smacks head/).  Around Comics 181.

Cool, Tony, thanks for the recommendation.
