I never said I didn't like the book. There were huge chunks that had me mesmerized. But you've gotta admit, that mother is NOT an easy read.
Agreed it's definitely in the "I have to be in the right mood" type of book. Not only there are times that that book feels like homework.

MARTY MCFLY FOR LIFE.
Ah the Silmarillion, The first time I ever tried to read it was at a party drunk. I don't know why, I just picked it up off a bookshelf and thought NOW IS THE TIME. It made no sense. Thankfully it lead to conversation with a fine young lass that led to something more. I wonder where she is now.
The second time I tried to read it I was stone cold sober and it made me wish I was drunk. Too damn dry. Even dryer then the LOTR trilogy and that is saying something. Never finished it.

Another fine episode.
You boys do need to get in on this Loose Ends business from Jason Latour, Chris Brunner, and Rico Renzi.

I have no idea how the story will turn out, but the first issue was gorgeous.
So, you know, in your travels...

On the Ape front: PKD Black Box Podcast posted a great talk today that disects the first 4 (?) Planet of the Apes movies or so. Mr. Shawn Pryor, Matt Burden, and that Gabe Hardman guy have a damn good session of Ape talk. I'm not even a huge fan of the francise, but I quite enjoyed it.

Finished the rest of the episode...I have to partially agree with Wood on Daredevil #1. I liked it for the most part but did feel that it was maybe too much of a sharp 180 for the character; Waid almost made Matt seem demented. He's gone through so much shit that for him to be this joyful and bright feels off, like he's just repressing the past - I kept expecting to see his eye start twitching like Dreyfuss in PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN.
I'm sure that as the series goes on the rosy outlook will become commonplace or wear off in spots but right now it's jarring.

Yeah, I think that was it. Call this character "Swashbuckler" with that beautiful Paolo Rivera art, and I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more. I just find it amusing that everyone is like, "WHEW, what a nice change!" when the characters top-selling AND most critically acclaimed runs are ALL with a more somber, serious Matt.
Miller's run
Bendis' run
Brubakers' run
He was an irrelevant, poorly-selling, C-list character at other times (and this is coming from someone who owns most of those issues including the Natasha/San Fran loveshack years).

The last arc I had read prior to this new series was the Lady Bullseye story and I do have to admit that I had reached a burnout point with the book, so I was looking forward to a new take. Again though, I guess I wasn't expecting as much of a departure as what we got here.

It was - so far - ONE issue. Will DD steal a kiss from a rescued woman every time? Probably not.
I look at it as a way to let us know this isn't the same depressed, guilt-ridden character we've been reading the past bunch of years. And that''s fine.
I thought the second story in the first issue did a good job of letting us know what's going on in Matt's head.

You're funny. You do realize the irony of you telling us to "chillax" considering how bent out of shape you get when a writer portrays a character you adore in a way that doesn't "feel" right, no?

I was a bit disappointed with episode 173. I believe it was when Vince was speaking about Jesse Moynihan's FORMING that the mention that the mention of Jesus being a fictional character. There is too much evidence out there to deny Jesus was a real man. He is mentioned in numerous writings of non-christian writers including Josephus, who is considered the greatest Jewish historian of his time. There are 10 known non-christian writers who mention Jesus within 150 years of his life, and by contrast over the same 150 years there are 9 non-christian sources who mention Tiberius Caesar. On top of that I find it hard to believe with such evidence that points to the reliability of the New Testament that we can deny it. There are over 5,500 manuscript copies of the New Testament with only a 25 year time gap between the original and the first surviving copy. The closest other document that compares is Homer, and that only has 643 copies within 500 years of the original. I generally enjoy hearing the in depth comic discussion, but hearing my faith being treated like a joke is unacceptable. I do hope that my ramblings have shed a little light on things.

Amen. Characters are reinvented all the time. This one feels more like a new outlook for Matt that is spilling out into the mood of the book. Dark things can still happen. Didn't The Spot kill a dude with his bare hands?
Maybe this book will just be more well-rounded in tone... balancing light and dark elements. You seen the cover to DD #5?
